October 29, 201510 yr hello all, I am in search for ultimate NAS case. I understand the definition varies from person to person and the needs. Here are my needs: -> Minimum of 10 drive bays -> Should accept mATX or mini-ITX motherboard -> At-least 2 expansion slots -> Short-depth - approx 15'' or so. Should be able to mount on AV cabinet I found few that are close but not perfect: http://www.istarusa.com/istarusa/products.php?series=Audio%20Video%20Rackmount⊂=AV%203U&model=D-395-DE15#.VjIcfCtmq_F http://www.istarusa.com/istarusa/products.php?series=Audio%20Video%20Rackmount⊂=AV%203U&model=D-3100HN#.VjIQYytmq_E http://www.istarusa.com/istarusa/products.php?series=Audio%20Video%20Rackmount⊂=AV%202U&model=D-265-DE9-MATX#.VjId2Ctmq_F http://www.u-nas.com/product/nsc800.html (not even close, but a good start I think) I thought of purchasing a regular mini-tower case and outfit it with 5.25'' to 3.5'' hot-swap cages. However, I am wondering if there are any NAS/Storage specific cases in the market?
October 30, 201510 yr So far, i haven't found a good solution either. Short depth 10+ drive enclosures just don't exist for the DIY market. (you can buy a https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS2415+ if you want a whole predone NAS) I'm thinking of starting with 4 of these: http://amzn.com/B00DGZ42SM and building a custom case around them.
October 30, 201510 yr Author I saw Synology and QNAP products. But I don't want to leave unRaid. I am not sure if there is enough market for short-depth custom NAS case.
October 30, 201510 yr Only 8 bays but you might might be able to squeeze more in especially if you use SSD for cache and app drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219029&cm_re=rack_case-_-11-219-029-_-Product only 15.25" deep. In fact add a 3-in-2 converter and you're up to 9 drives without modifications
October 30, 201510 yr Author Only 8 bays but you might might be able to squeeze more in especially if you use SSD for cache and app drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219029&cm_re=rack_case-_-11-219-029-_-Product only 15.25" deep. In fact add a 3-in-2 converter and you're up to 9 drives without modifications The 3-in-2 converter you are referring to is it the standard hot-swap converter? I saw this case earlier and thought since it has only 2 external 5.25'' drive bays, I cannot use this. All the 5.25'' converters are 2 bay 5.25'' to 5 bay 3.5''.
October 30, 201510 yr I know of no 5-in-2 converters, only 5-in-3, 4-in-3 or 3-in-2. There are lots of 3-in-2, some are hot swap some are not so take your pick. the non-hotswaps tend to have front fans and are thus shallower in the back which might help if there are clearance issues with a hotswap. google is of course your friend.
October 30, 201510 yr How about this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219053&cm_re=NORCO_RPC-431-_-11-219-053-_-Product I've been looking as well since I want to upgrade my #1 server.. With a SuperMicro MB, xeon CPU.. I also would like to be able to add a SATA card, if I need it, and Hot Swap to this and I"m not sure if there is room with this case.
October 30, 201510 yr Author jumperalex, you are correct. My typo, (should be 5-in-3). So, on this RPC-430 do you think I can put three of 5-in-3 hot swap cages? Russ Uno, Norco RPC-431 looks interesting. Looks like I can't use hot swap cages with this?
