November 1, 201510 yr Hello, I have an array with 10 drives plus another 6 connected drives I had just precleared to start replacing some of the old drives in my array. For the monthly parity check this morning I had a number of read errors on the parity drive. Subsequent retries must have succeeded since the check completed with 0 errors. Still, wanting to see if it was a cable issue, I pulled, unbundled, and re-routed all my cables: something I've wanted to do for awhile now. Array came back up, but had the following errors (full syslog attached): Nov 1 08:26:35 Hyperion kernel: ata2.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0xfffd SErr 0x280100 action 0x6 frozen (Errors) Nov 1 Oct 1 00:06:21 Hyperion avahi-daemon[3832]: Received packet from invalid interface. Unfortunately I didn't save the equivalent portion from today's failure. It got log rolled because of all of those "Received packet from invalid interface" warnings. Because I was getting ready to replace some drives, I have 5 warm spares ready to go. I can do whatever makes sense. UPDATE: I was able to figure out that the READ FPDMA QUEUED errors are on my SSD. SMART long test returns no issues on that drive. I moved it to the other other 6Gbps port on my motherboard and reduced all those instances of the error down to two instances on subsequent reboots. So it's port or cable, I think. I'm going to make a trip out for a new cable this afternoon. Unfortunately, that doesn't solve my parity disk0 read error issues. I'll try swapping out its cable as well.

November 2, 201510 yr Author The preferred diagnostics in v6 is to go to Tools - Diagnostics and post the complete diagnostics zip. It has syslog, SMART, and other stuff. Oops, didn't realize. Turns out there's a ton of personally-identifying stuff in there that's not in the syslog. Took some time to clean. I hope people aren't posting these to the forum for support without cleaning them. An unRAID version number, IP address, and a list of valid users on the box could be invaluable. I hope I got everything. Note on this reboot the SSD got ata1 in the logs, and had two instances of the READ FPDMA QUEUED issue. It's the Samsung 830 in the SMART folder. I wasn't able to get a new cable today, but will do so tomorrow. For the other issue, the parity check is 75% complete with no errors this time. hyperion-diagnostics-20151101-1548.zip
November 2, 201510 yr Turns out there's a ton of personally-identifying stuff in there that's not in the syslog. Took some time to clean. I hope people aren't posting these to the forum for support without cleaning them. An unRAID version number, IP address, and a list of valid users on the box could be invaluable. If your unraid box has a public IP, you are probably already hacked. The only IP visible in the syslogs should be a non internet routable private IP, which is only reachable from inside your home network. The only user that has local login on the console is root, the share users aren't allowed console access. Unraid's version number would only be interesting if you were running an old version with known issues, and even then the box should NEVER be reachable from the internet in general without secondary protection like a VPN. Can you give me a scenario where the information in your diagnostics could be used to locate and hack your box?
November 2, 201510 yr Author I don't open mine up publicly, but I know there are plenty of people that do. There's OwnCloud and Plex and a bunch of others that might be useful. As you state, it's not in the syslog, but it's entirely possible a public IP is in ifconfig for such a user. My public IP seems to have been exposed by CrashPlan. It's good to know that usernames don't have login privileges, I didn't realize that, but mine and all of my local users are our actual names, which I don't really want to share. So can anything there be used to locate and hack my box? No, because even with my public IP it's still fully firewalled without a single open port, but there certainly are users that might be vulnerable. Maybe I'm being too paranoid, I don't know.
November 2, 201510 yr Community Expert From the syslog in the OP: Nov 1 08:20:27 Hyperion kernel: ata2.00: ATA-9: SAMSUNG SSD 830 Series, S0XYNEAC719884, CXM03B1Q, max UDMA/133 Possibly connection issues or maybe port or controller. Perhaps more likely with that many drives is power supply, especially if you have just added several. What is the exact model of your power supply?

Perhaps more likely with that many drives is power supply, especially if you have just added several. What is the exact model of your power supply? The extra drives have been in the case and powered up for a few months, I only just now got around to preclearing them. Been busier than expected. Still, that's a good point. Certainly a possibility. I have a Seasonic X650 80-plus Gold. According to the Kill-A-Watt my current draw with all drives powered up, spinning, and reading (parity check going) is 157W. Not sure how taxing that is on the individual PSU rails, but it's well below the overall rated power (650W). Should I consider something beefier? Note that 3-4 of the current drives are temporary. I'll be swapping out older units soon, and don't plan on expanding the array within the next year or two. These replacements will have me set for awhile.
November 2, 201510 yr Your power supply should be fine ... you have plenty of power on the 12v rail, and clearly a LOT of headroom for normal operation. Given that you're getting consistent read errors on the parity drive, I'd replace the drive. That's also an easy way to confirm you're not having a controller or cabling issue => if a nice new parity drive then doesn't have any errors during a parity check, you'll know that was the issue.

Seems like a good plan. I think I'll do that. Will also swap the SATA cables ASAP and run like that for awhile. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
November 3, 201510 yr Good plan. You definitely want to be confident in the parity drive BEFORE you start replacing drives and doing rebuilds.
November 17, 201510 yr Author Replaced a bunch of cables and have been running for awhile like this. Array drives have been solid through several parity checks. However, I'm still getting errors on the SSD. Starting to wonder if the drive is failing: note the BadCRC errors now mixed in with the READ FPDMA QUEUED errors I was seeing previously. CRC Error Count on the drive is 3 higher than when I started this thread.
