***GUIDE*** Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan – VM on unRAID

Recommended Posts

I've been playing around with this and have been wondering if anyone could reproduce what I'm experiencing...

As a method of stress testing, I use this terminal command to push the cpu (command entered in terminal inside of the VM) :

yes > /dev/null &

I enter that command once more for each virtual cpu of the machine (so for a VM with 2 vcpus I would enter it twice). If you check Activity Monitor you can see the CPU getting maxed out.

You can then kill the process with:

killall yes

As soon as the guest hits 100% load this way, the machine seems to lock up almost entirely. Or at least mac's screensharing locks up so much that nothing is responsive for a second, and then I lose the vnc connection.

I'm still able to force the OS to gracefully shutdown by using Apple Remote Desktop.

I'm my expierence with official macs, several different hackintoshs, and ESXI osx guests, I've never seen such a severe lockup when stressing like this.

I'm not doing any gpu passthrough, but for people that are I'm curious what this would be like then.

Perhaps are there more libvirt configuration paramaters on the cpu that might change something?

Would love to hear some thoughts that anyone has!

I've tried pinning like the guide:

  <vcpu placement='static'>2</vcpu>
  <cputune>
    <vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='3'/>
    <vcpupin vcpu='1' cpuset='7'/>
  </cputune>

and also stripping that down:

  <vcpu placement='static'>2</vcpu>

My hardware that I'm testing on:

Asus P8P67 DELUXE, i7-2600K

My full xml also:

Awesome guide!

Got it all working but noticed the speeds of the VM is slow in terms of processing.

I am only getting 1762 single core 32 bit performance but 20383 multicore performance.

I have set the VM to 16 cores for my dual intel xeon 2650 setup with 32 GB ddr3 ram.

Is the bottleneck caused by this line in the XML?

  <cpu mode='custom' match='exact'>

    <model fallback='allow'>core2duo</model>

  </cpu>

I've tried setting the SMBIOS to identify the VM as a Mac Pro 6,1 at 2.8 GHZ processor (image attached), but the geek bench 3 scores are still the same.

Anyone manage to jump out of this bottleneck? I've tried setting the XML from core2duo to SandyBridge but it did not boot, just hangs at the enoch boot screen and reboots.

What i need to change to make the gpu and the iogear to work ?

wow thats a bit hard to help you without any info on your devices etc !  ???

here is my xml for the gpu part

   <qemu:arg value='-device'/>
    <qemu:arg value='ioh3420,bus=pcie.0,addr=1c.0,multifunction=on,port=2,chassis=1,id=root.1'/>
    <qemu:arg value='-device'/>
    <qemu:arg value='vfio-pci,host=03:00.0,bus=pcie.0,multifunction=on,x-vga=on'/>
    <qemu:arg value='-device'/>
    <qemu:arg value='vfio-pci,host=03:00.1,bus=pcie.0'/>

the part you will have to change is

host=03:00.0 and host=03:00.1

you need to look in tools system devices where you will see the pci devices

for my 2 gpus in my list it looks like this

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [10de:1b81] (rev a1)
02:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:10f0] (rev a1)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Caicos [Radeon HD 6450/7450/8450 / R5 230 OEM] [1002:6779]
03:00.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Caicos HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6400 Series] [1002:aa98]

so you need to check the number your ati card is and put it in the xml as i have in mine.

then remove the vnc part of your xml

<graphics type=’vnc’ port=’-1? autoport=’yes’ websocket=’-1? listen=’0.0.0.0? keymap=’en-us’>
<listen type=’address’ address=’0.0.0.0’/>
</graphics>
<video>
<model type=’vmvga’ vram=’16384? heads=’1’/>
<address type=’pci’ domain=’0x0000? bus=’0x00? slot=’0x01? function=’0x0’/>
</video>

for your usb blue tooth that will be harder

You can try adding it to the hostdev part of your xml but you may need to end up adding a whole usb controller

here is an example

<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' managed='no'>
      <source>
        <vendor id='0x0a12'/>
        <product id='0x0001'/>
      </source>
    </hostdev>

you would put this before

 <memballoon model='none'/>

of your xml

you will need to find the vendor and product id of your bluetooth and change it to that.

again found in tools system devices, usb devices  ie mine is

Bus 003 Device 004: ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)

so 0a12 is vendor id ( 0x0a12 )  and  0001 product ( 0x0001 )

here is for your reference my whole xml for you to compare with yours

Great guide.  My only problem is that when connecting to the osx guest from windows 10 machine with vnc there is a bad mouse offset and the host cursor is not in sync with the guest cursor.  I tried tightvnc and same behavior.

Any suggetions?

Great guide.  My only problem is that when connecting to the osx guest from windows 10 machine with vnc there is a bad mouse offset and the host cursor is not in sync with the guest cursor.  I tried tightvnc and same behavior.

Any suggetions?

Hi All,

First off, incredible guide! It would be very difficult to get a working install of El Capitan if it wasn't for this post. Thanks a lot!

I just have a few problems:

1) I'm passing through my Logitech c920 webcam but I am always getting the "There is no video device." error whenever I try to use an application that uses the webcam.

2) Unable to install Clover. Encountering the same problem as bluepr0 (https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=43816.msg474337;topicseen#msg474337)

3) Lots of Nvidia GPU problems, (Nvidia toolbar shows I'm still using native osx display device.)

Heres my XML

I'm obviously a noob, but I'm a persistent noob. after the "KernelBooter_kexts"="Yes" "CsrActiveConfig"="103" (which I can type from muscle memory now) I've tried:

GraphicsEnabler=No (and Yes)

nv_disable=1 //which shouldn't matter I think because I don't plan and passing through a graphics card nor have I gotten that far.

busratio=26 //which I think is right for my CPU, 5930k, I've also tried 27,28,20,18

dart=0

-x

-s

and a few others, am I supposed to be adding these options elsewhere?

Also it looks like it is picking up a core2duo as my processor clocked at 2.4GHz, but maybe that is intended I don't know.

I'm using unraid 6.2.0beta23 and I downloaded the 10.11.5 dmg on my Mac Book Pro.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone have got ideas on what I'm doing wrong here? I'm using unRAID 6.2.0-rc3...  :-\

On 6.2 rc2 & 3, I had to modify my /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf and update the cgroup_device_acl to include the dev nodes of the vfio/##'s, in the below example, 17 and 13 (that entire property array may have been commented out).  Per your post, you need to use /dev/vfio/26:

cgroup_device_acl = [
    "/dev/null", "/dev/full", "/dev/zero",
    "/dev/random", "/dev/urandom",
    "/dev/ptmx", "/dev/kvm", "/dev/kqemu",
    "/dev/rtc","/dev/hpet", "/dev/vfio/vfio",
    "/dev/vfio/17",
    "/dev/vfio/13"
]

...so stop the array, modify /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf, then start the array and your VM.

What file transfer speeds are you all getting? With my vm on a ssd cache disk, I am only seeing a constant transfer rate of about 45 MBps with peaks up to 50MBps either direction. It's ok.... but with my Windows 10 vm I hit about 90MBps average with peaks up to 100MBps (with the same test file.) These are listed speeds coming from a different server (and verified from that server) and not taken from inside the vm's themselves. Both are using br0 for networking (4port onboard nic.) I've also done 5 simultaneous file transfers from the cache drive to there physical computers and hit about 2Gbps, so I don't think the nic is the problem.

I've actually created 3 different OS X vm's and they all have the same sort of speed limit on them of about 45MBps.

When doing a drag and drop file transfer to the cache disk on the network from a physical computer, I get a little over 100MBps, so I don't think the disk isn't the source of the problem.

Thoughts?

If anyone is interested in getting Nvidia HDMI audio working on Chameleon, the HDMIAudio-1.0.dmg works from the following tonymax86 forum post:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/clover-hdmi-audio-for-nvidia-amd-cards-easy-way.145399/

Note that I'm using a PNY GT730, so ymmv with different Nvidia cards...

I just ran through a fresh install (using 10.11.3) and my install flow was:

## I setup my OSX-El-Capitan XML to use Nvidia GPU, and USB card passthrough from the outset, but that shouldn't be required.  Just enable GPU passthrough after the install and proceed:

- Boot using the following params (nv_disable=1) until you have the NVIDIA Web Driver 346.03.05f02 installed:

"KernelBooter_kexts"="Yes" "CsrActiveConfig"="103" nv_disable=1 -v

- Complete the Install per Archdrafts guide and boot into OSx.

- Create the /Extra/org.chameleon.boot.plist; I'm using:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
    <key>Timeout</key>
    <string>5</string>
    <key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>PCIRootUID</key>
    <string>1</string>
    <key>KernelBooter_kexts</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>Kernel Flags</key>
    <string>-v nvda_drv=1 kext-dev-mode=1</string>
    <key>CsrActiveConfig</key>
    <string>3</string>
    <key>USBBusFix</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>EHCIacquire</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>UHCIreset</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>EHCIhard</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>EnableHDMIAudio</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>Graphics Mode</key>
    <string>1440x900x32</string>
</dict>

- Create the /Extra/smbios.plist; I'm using (SandyBridge 2xE5 2670 Xeons):

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
    <key>SMbiosdate</key>
    <string>10/07/2013</string>
    <key>SMbiosvendor</key>
    <string>Apple Inc.</string>
    <key>SMbiosversion</key>
    <string>IM141.88Z.0118.B00.1309031249</string>
    <key>SMboardproduct</key>
    <string>Mac-27ADBB7B4CEE8E61</string>
    <key>SMfamily</key>
    <string>iMac</string>
    <key>SMmanufacturer</key>
    <string>Apple Inc.</string>
    <key>SMproductname</key>
    <string>iMac14,2</string>
    <key>SMserial</key>
    <string>C02LH068FLHH</string>
    <key>SMsystemversion</key>
    <string>1.0</string>
</dict>
</plist>?

- Install the NVIDIA Web Driver 346.03.05f02 (I don't remember if this was a 'patched' driver found on a forum or downloaded directly from Nvidia)...  But this one worked with 10.11.3

- Download/mount the HDMIAudio-1.0.dmg disk image (from that Tonymacx86 forum topic), and for simplicity, copy the HDMIAudio.kext and install.sh to your Desktop

- Open a terminal, navigate to your Desktop (cd ~/Desktop), then run the installer (sudo ./install.sh) which will automatically install the HDMIAudio.kext kernel extension.

- Reboot and verify that under the System Information -> Audio; that there is an HDMI device.  If there is, you are golden :)

...Note that the HDMIAudio-1.0.dmg kext was also needed/works when I used Clover (as hdmi audio hadn't automatically worked for me when booting using Clover, which kinda pissed me off)...  I've since switched back to Chameleon due to USB passthrough issues when using Clover (that I don't experience using Chameleon).

Regards,

Jake

Maybe this is a noob question but can you be more specific on how to modify /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf? I am having the same problem as above and can't figure it out. Thanks...

In the unraid console, do

nano /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf

scroll down to the cgroup device acl line and the lines needed

I tried that however the file is empty.

Ok so what I think is going on is as follows... The file does not exist until I start the array, once I start the array I can view it through the console with nano /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf. I tried stopping the array with the file open in nano making the changes and saving before restarting the array but once the array is started i view the file again with nano and my changes are not there. If I again shut down the array and open with nano I get the file with the changes made... Any ideas what is going on?
