***GUIDE*** Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan – VM on unRAID

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, any other suggestions to help my issue?

Thanks again!

Hi everyone,

Hoping to get some help as although I was able to get the VM to work through VNC, I haven't been able to get it to work with VGA passthrough. Here is the effort I get when I launch the VM:

internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2016-10-26T01:29:58.415734Z qemu-system-x86_64: -device vfio-pci,host=01:00.0,bus=pcie.0,addr=00.0,multifunction=on,x-vga=on: PCI: slot 0 function 0 not available for vfio-pci, in use by mch

I have had no issue getting a Windows 10 VM with VGA passthrough to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have

00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation Skylake PCIe Controller (x16) [8086:1901] (rev 07) .

in your iommu group 1  which could cause you a problem, but passing to a windows vm was okay.

Maybe try using hostdev to passthrough the gpu

i have put your gpu in the xml below as hostdev

Posting here might actually help...

Good evening!

I am trying to pass through my GeForce 970 to macOS 10.11, but I can't get it to boot. I keep getting an error.

Next question would be...how do I pass through my mouse and keyboard with QEMU commands. I have had the awfullest luck with them.

Error:

Thanks Gridrunner! Unfortunately I am still getting an error. Here is the new error:

internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2016-11-04T02:10:11.703745Z qemu-system-x86_64: -device -device: Unknown protocol 'vfio-pci,host=01'

Any idea what this is saying and what could solve it?

I have had no issue getting a Windows 10 VM with VGA passthrough to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have

00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation Skylake PCIe Controller (x16) [8086:1901] (rev 07) .

in your iommu group 1  which could cause you a problem, but passing to a windows vm was okay.

Maybe try using hostdev to passthrough the gpu

i have put your gpu in the xml below as hostdev

I have had no issue getting a Windows 10 VM with VGA passthrough to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have

00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation Skylake PCIe Controller (x16) [8086:1901] (rev 07) .

in your iommu group 1  which could cause you a problem, but passing to a windows vm was okay.

Maybe try using hostdev to passthrough the gpu

i have put your gpu in the xml below as hostdev

Bumping this. Really hoping to get some help to solve this. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi everyone, any other suggestions to help my issue?

Thanks again!

Hi everyone,

Hoping to get some help as although I was able to get the VM to work through VNC, I haven't been able to get it to work with VGA passthrough. Here is the effort I get when I launch the VM:

I have had no issue getting a Windows 10 VM with VGA passthrough to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have

00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation Skylake PCIe Controller (x16) [8086:1901] (rev 07) .

in your iommu group 1  which could cause you a problem, but passing to a windows vm was okay.

Maybe try using hostdev to passthrough the gpu

i have put your gpu in the xml below as hostdev

I really think you need to isolate the gpu into its own iommu group

/sys/kernel/iommu_groups/1/devices/0000:00:01.0
/sys/kernel/iommu_groups/1/devices/0000:01:00.0
/sys/kernel/iommu_groups/1/devices/0000:01:00.1

You see its there with the pci bridge. I uploaded a video yesterday about setting up vms and in that video it is a skylake system with the iommu grouping with the gpu the same as you have. Turn on acs override then try again. Link to the video here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=53435.msg514162#msg514162

Thanks gridrunner for making that video. I have done what you have instructed and the VM does appear to start without error (with play button) and I hear the video card start spinning like it does for Windows 10 but nothing is displaying. Is there something I need to change to the XML now that I have changed the IOMMU Groups? Getting awfully close and thanks again for your help.

No your id for the gpu is the same. So it should be fine. Questions.

1. So when you start the vm do you get anything show on the screen at all, before the osx starts loading or is the screen black all the time.

2. Is your igpu set as the primary graphics card for unRAID. (if you connect the monitor to the integrated graphics on motherboard you should see the console. If not please set your motherboard bios for onboard to be primary.

One thing you could try is to change the installation to ovmf and use clover as bootloader. To see how please check the second video here.http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=51915.0

Hi Gridrunner, I got it to boot with Clover. Thank you.

Now I need to figure out how to get the GPU to get recognized in OS X as well as the USBs for the mouse and keyboard. Getting there...

You see its there with the pci bridge. I uploaded a video yesterday about setting up vms and in that video it is a skylake system with the iommu grouping with the gpu the same as you have. Turn on acs override then try again. Link to the video here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=53435.msg514162#msg514162

I'm not entirely sure this is correct, since in my unRAID system, my Nvidia GTX 960 is in an IOMMU group with the PCIe bridge it's attached to, and it works fine. Of course, it may limit the ability to split the video card from other video cards that happen to route through the same bridge. I found that I could not separate them even with ACS override, possibly due to my motherboard.

And before anyone brings it up again, I do not wish to try the bottom slot in the board, since that would require mounting the video card loose in the case with an offset cable, and I'm not that desperate to install a second video card for a second VM. Before I even consider solutions to that, I would instead consult the parts forums here, and see which Xeon boards would be handy for that purpose. And I'd consider a different case, something maybe larger.

When I doing a GPU passthrough, I got some trouble.

I use unRaid 6.2.4

When I set the GPU passthrough with hostdev like

    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x05' function='0x0'/>
    </hostdev>
    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
      </source>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x06' function='0x0'/>
    </hostdev>

which just exactly the same like VM manager GUI.

But the result is black screen, I think that's because I need set multifunction and x-vga=on in options.

So I changed to qemu:arg format, I didn't add multifctuon and vga options for test.

    <qemu:arg value='-device'/>
    <qemu:arg value='vfio-pci,host=02:00.0,bus=pcie.0,addr=0x6'/>
    <qemu:arg value='-device'/>
    <qemu:arg value='vfio-pci,host=02:00.1,bus=pcie.0,addr=0x8'/>

I didn't expect this would work, but i got an error instead of a black screen.

internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2016-11-12T16:01:51.190442Z qemu-system-x86_64: -device vfio-pci,host=02:00.0,bus=pcie.0,addr=0x6: vfio: error opening /dev/vfio/13: Operation not permitted

I can't understand why this happened, IMO, the qemu:arg format is just the same translate to the hostdev config, why the prev one got a black screen, and the second one got such an error, which prevent me add v-vga options to device.

Please post your iommu groups

Ok please try the xml like his for the host dev.

<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>

    </hostdev>
    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
      </source>

    </hostdev>

The unRAID vm manager will add the correct missing <address type='pci'  xxxxxxx>

Ok please try the xml like his for the host dev.

<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>

    </hostdev>
    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
      </source>

    </hostdev>

The unRAID vm manager will add the correct missing <address type='pci'  xxxxxxx>

Now everything works fine, the point is I need enable x-vga=on, and I sent a feedback, they tell me i can use    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes' xvga='yes'>

to enable it in hostdev format, a very cool way!

Hi gridrunner

First off thank you so much for your support and videos for Mac OS for UNRAID - everyone owes you a big thank you including myself.

I got everything working including the video drivers for my GTX 950 in Mac OS 10.11.

The only thing I am looking for help is passing through my integrated audio, specifically the 00:1f.3 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H HD Audio [8086:a170] (rev 31) which I have managed to pass through in Windows 10 by applying a hack to my UNRAID Syslinux Configuration.

What would I need to put in my Mac OS VM XML to make it work?

Thanks again!

Hi Gridrunner, I got it to boot with Clover. Thank you.

Now I need to figure out how to get the GPU to get recognized in OS X as well as the USBs for the mouse and keyboard. Getting there...

Hi everyone,

Any ideas on what could help fix my problem?

Thanks

Hi gridrunner,

I wasn't able to get the audio working with my VGA card as my monitor is DVI so I ended up getting a USB Creative Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1 and thought it would be a breeze to get to work but I was wrong and haven't been able to get it to pass through and get the following log error:

Warning: speed mismatch trying to attach usb device "SB Omni Surround 5.1" (high speed) to bus "usb.0", port "2.2" (full speed)
2016-11-20T23:30:16.671461Z qemu-system-x86_64: Warning: speed mismatch trying to attach usb device "SB Omni Surround 5.1" (high speed) to bus "usb.0", port "2.2" (full speed)

I tried passing through my integrated USB 3.1 controller but haven't been able to without getting an error as I try to launch the VM.

Any idea what could solve this?

Thanks again.

As DoeBoye says you will probably have to pass through a usb controller to get audio the usb audio device that you are using.

However i would still use the hdmi audio with and hdmi to dvi plus audio out. As this would also be useful for other vms aswell.

5. Use Disk Utility to Erase your virtual disk, with a name Untitled

My disk utility can't erase the virtual disk. It shows up as "Apple read/write media," Clicking erase defaults to format unknown in the drop down, but no matter what format I choose it says Erase process has failed. Click Done to continue. Further investigation shows the error could not unmount disk, but the disk was never mounted in the first place...

Move the image to Desktop and format it from there. I was unable to format my image file on the root drive as well.

Thanks!

What a weird limitation. Thanks for the heads up.

Well, I have followed the guide in the initial post to a "T". And all I end up with is this:

See attachment.

Anyone have any ideas?

UNraid 6.2.4 on Xeon loaded SuperMicro board. 32gigs of ram and a GeForce 1060 GPU.  I am pretty confident that if I can get it to install, I can get USB/GPU passthrough.  I have a Win 10 machine running passthrough perfectly.  Thanks for any suggestions.
