Unsure on the oomph needed or Horse Power

Featured Replies

As you see from my signature I have a AMD 8320 and a Asrock and Extreme 3.

Currently just using this setup for NZB apps and plex, and have a VM setup as a steam gaming server.

I'm looking to take advantage of the OpenElec VM as my new HTPC replacement and use another VM for gaming with GPU pass through.

Should I be concerned that what I have currently is enough to do all or should I be looking an upgrade cpu and motherboard.

While it doesn't match the "horsepower" you'd get with an i7 or a Xeon, the 8320 does have a reasonable amount of "oomph" ==> PassMark of 8027  [vs. 11000+ for an i7-4790k or i7-6700k and ~ 10000 for a high-end E3 series Xeon).

I'd think it will work fine for what you've described.  If you want to upgrade something, consider getting a high-end graphics card ... that's likely to make FAR more difference in gaming than a more powerful CPU.
