September 21, 200916 yr Author Drive 15 is one of the drives that data was corrupt on. I pulled that drive & ran smartctl on it from my windows box. September 22, 200916 yr Interesting in that the smart report for drive15 disk says both: SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED and SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1 Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 90% 4883 1604030 It must take a pretty drastic failure for them to report the overall health as FAILED. Good thing you did not have a "drastic failure." Joe L. It's true, it does take a fairly drastic condition to produce FAILED. But then again, I've had drives in the FAILED state still run for quite some time. My last 10,000RPM scsi drive was in that state for a few months before I bought a new system. It was embedded in the case and I did not feel like taking out the drives, so I bought a new system LOL! (I needed it anyway). In any case, this read failure might go away if a pre-clear is done on it. I have had them go away after running dban on the drive. So a pre-clear should do the same thing. Also a -t long test is highly recommended.

I ran Seatools on this drive & it failed the short dst & long dts. I'll repost the smart results.. I believe I finally have a handle on what went wrong or what didn't go wrong..lol A few more tests & I'll post the results at the end of this post. Maybe it will help someone else in the future.. September 22, 200916 yr It is stopping at a few bad sectors (UNCorrectable). This appears to me to be an excellent candidate for SpinRite, a tool that non-destructively tests and recovers every sector, or forces it to be remapped. Unfortunately SpinRite takes a VERY long time, even on an old 40GB drive, so running one full pass on a 1.5TB drive could easily take several weeks! By the way, these are the same results you had posted earlier, just includes one more hour of usage, one short test, one long test, and possibly one more UNC sector.

You might try the preclear_disk.sh script... If the drive decides to relocate that sector, you might be able to use that drive. If not, it is cleared of whatever it can before you send it in for RMA. September 22, 200916 yr Author By the way, these are the same results you had posted earlier, just includes one more hour of usage, one short test, one long test, and possibly one more UNC sector. The previous results on this drive only had the short test. Weebotech asked for the long test. That is why I posted the results again with the long test added.. There are 2 different drives.. But I bet you knew that. Don't mean to offend. I see what you are talking about on the hour usage & the UNC sector. Under UNC it went from 49 to 52. Looks like that is increasing. The drive was manufactured 3-14-09. I'll RMA it. Definitely under warranty. By the way I just finished generating parity. That new WD 2tb drive took awhile. I'm pre-clearing the other Seagate 1.5tb now. When it's done I'll add it back to the array & run a parity check to make sure there aren't any errors.

Joe L. I'm pre-clearing the drive with the 1 reallocated sector. As long as that number stays the same I'll keep the drive. I'm sending the other drive in for RMA replacement. It has 36 reallocated sectors & 4 pending sectors. Plus it failed the long & short smart tests. And I have a advance replacement already on the way from WD replacing the 500gig drive that started this mess.. It's been fun.. On top of that I even found a bad sata cable on a totally different drive. Parity Swap didn't have a chance..... Funny thing is I ran a parity check only last week about 4 days before everything blew up. Everything checked out fine. Zero errors.. Guess I made it mad... lol
September 25, 200916 yr Hate that drives tend to fail so early in their lives.I've worked in storage for many years, and it has always been my experience that drives either fail in the first week, or keep running for years. I don't recall ever having a drive fail between 2 weeks and 2 years.
