Should data be shared evenly over array?

Hi All

My poor UnRaid Server has had <500Mb free on a total capacity of 8Tb for ages.... 3Tb parity +( 1x2Tb & 2 x 3Tb) disks

So I bought and precleared a 4Tb disk to upgrade the parity disk. Then precleared the old 3Tb parity disk (just to be safe) and replaced the 2Tb disk in the array... free space at last :)

Anyway as you can imagine - all the data disks in the array are full except the newly added 3Tb disk which has 1Tb of space... so my question is this - is it good practice to re-distribute the data evenly across the array so that all the disks are 75% (ish) full... or is it OK to have all the disks at 99.9% full apart from the new one?

If it is good pracice to share the data about - is there an automatic way to do this - or should I just manually move shares across disks?

Thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

There's no real reason to try and equally distribute the data.

Just set the allocation method as you see fit -- fill-up, high-water, or most-free as you desire for each of the shares.

I tend to just fill up the disks, but it's just a personal choice.

Thanks Gary - I'll just leave alone then and learn to love the "red" icons :)

hey, might want to update your signature now that you changed the drives.
