November 17, 201510 yr Community Expert Hi All My poor UnRaid Server has had <500Mb free on a total capacity of 8Tb for ages.... 3Tb parity +( 1x2Tb & 2 x 3Tb) disks So I bought and precleared a 4Tb disk to upgrade the parity disk. Then precleared the old 3Tb parity disk (just to be safe) and replaced the 2Tb disk in the array... free space at last Anyway as you can imagine - all the data disks in the array are full except the newly added 3Tb disk which has 1Tb of space... so my question is this - is it good practice to re-distribute the data evenly across the array so that all the disks are 75% (ish) full... or is it OK to have all the disks at 99.9% full apart from the new one? If it is good pracice to share the data about - is there an automatic way to do this - or should I just manually move shares across disks? Thoughts appreciated. Thanks
November 17, 201510 yr There's no real reason to try and equally distribute the data. Just set the allocation method as you see fit -- fill-up, high-water, or most-free as you desire for each of the shares. I tend to just fill up the disks, but it's just a personal choice.
