November 18, 201510 yr Hi all! I built my unRAID server about 2 years ago. Here are the current specs: CM Storm Trooper - Gaming Full Tower Computer Case with Handle and External 2.5" Drive Dock Gigabyte GA-F2A85XM-D3H AMD Socket FM2 A85X (Hudson D4) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Motherboard AMD Dual-Core A4-Series APU for Desktops A4-4000 with Radeon HD 7480D (AD4000OKHLBOX) 8 x Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive I've filled it up, so it's time to expand. I have used all SATA ports on the MB, so that means I need a controller card. I'm also looking into incorporating drive cages. Here is what I plan on purchasing: ICY DOCK Black Vortex MB074SP-1B 3.5” SATA HDD 4 in 3 Hot-Swap Module Cooler Cage WD Red WD60EFRX 6TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive Bare Drive SUPERMICRO AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 PCI-Express 2.0 x8 SATA / SAS 8-Port Controller Card 3ware CBL-SFF8087OCF-05M 1 Unit of .5M Multi-lane Internal (SFF-8087) Serial ATA Breakout Cable This is my first time using both controller card and hard drive cages, so I wanted to run this by the community to make sure that I'm not forgetting something or buying something that is incompatible. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks!
November 26, 201510 yr Author So I wanted to provide an update in case anyone finds this information useful in the future. I ended up purchasing: 2 x ICY DOCK Black Vortex MB074SP-1B 3.5” SATA HDD 4 in 3 Hot-Swap Module Cooler Cage SUPERMICRO AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 PCI-Express 2.0 x8 SATA / SAS 8-Port Controller Card 2 x WD Red WD60EFRX 6TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive Bare Drive 2 x Cable Matters® Mini-SAS to 4 SATA Forward Breakout Cable - 1m I'm trying to roll out the upgrade in stages: Phase 1 - Completed on 11/25/2015 I yanked out all of my existing hard drives and SATA cables Installed the new Icy Dock cages with hard drives Installed the SATA controller card Plugged in the power and SATA breakout cables Powered on and everything is working. I'm running a parity check right now to ensure no data loss. Should be completed tomorrow. Phase 2 I have room for 4 more hard drives in my case. My motherboard now has 8 free SATA ports, so no limitation there. I plan on installing my two new 6TB hard drives and running 3 preclear cycles to ensure they are not faulty. Phase 3 Turn one of my new HDs into my parity drive. Need to read up on this process. I like to keep a warm spare in my system for a drive failure, so that will probably be my other new 6TB drive. That means when I'm all finished I'll have two, 4TB drives to fill (old parity drive and old warm spare). I'll also have two more spots in my case for future expansion. Phase 4 Hopefully many months down the road... I will eventually need to replace my case with something bigger so that I can have a 16 drive system. I'll try to update this if I run into any problems during the upgrade. Hope this helps!
March 23, 201610 yr I'm building up from my first unraid box, and got a Trooper for the case, and was looking for people who used the controller card and expanded. Your system is really similar to what I am building. If you could post a picture of the inside all built out, it would be super appreciated. How did the icy docks work with the trooper case? I got a little nervous about the installation when I looked at the way that the drive bays worked.
March 24, 201610 yr I just purchased 3 Rosewill HDD Cages 4x3 for $50 each mostly all positive reviews so im looking forward towards my firsts cages
