(Oh no, not another) Slow preclear thread

Featured Replies

Well generally I seem to recall my 4TB drives taking about 48hrs to preclear.  The machine I use for preclearing is a spare system, and I am using an RC 5.x version of unraid on a spare USB stick for it.  My system and unraid setup has not changed; I've used this exact system, unraid stick, same SATA cables, etc., for years to preclear.

Right now I'm at 58 hours for two disks, a 3TB and a 4TB.  The 3TB is at Step 10, 61% complete.  The 4TB, after 58 hours, is still at Step 2.  Both drives were showing 22-24MB/s write speeds for Step 2.  The 3TB disk is showing 118MB/s read speeds for Step 10 (which is more along the lines of what I'm used to).

I never really paid attention to the write speeds on Step 2 before, preclear has always been just set it, forget it, come back in a couple days and use the drives.

But its never taken this long.

BIOS (AHCI) config on the system hasn't changed.  Not sure what could be accounting for the dismal write speeds...

Ideas welcome.

The usual assumption would be that there's something wrong with the drive!  But I'm sure that's occurred to you.

Check the final SMART report, or if you abort it, check a fresh SMART report.
