November 27, 201510 yr I've had drives die in the pre-clear process on the 2nd pass and even once on the 3rd pass. So I always preclear them with 3 cycles so that I can RMA the bad drives before I put data on them.
November 27, 201510 yr The answer is because you need 3 cycles to fully test the hardware before you trust it with your data. I have had multiple drives die on the second pass and a few drives die on pass number three. Its better to catch these issues before you place them in your array, otherwise you have to deal with an array rebuild.
