Build a new unRAID server with 4 drives (and retain data on 3)?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to purchase the basic license, and preserve the data on 3 of my existing hard drives. They are formatted with either btrfs, or ext4. The 4th drive is a 3.0TB which is partitioned into a 2TB partition, and a 1TB for storing data. I was using SnapRAID on it, on Ubuntu. And while it was fun to use for the past 6-7 years and taught me a lot about Ubuntu/Linux, I want a more hands off system now for storage.

If preserving data is not an option, I have an external 5TB Seagate which I can transfer data one drive at a time. But that would be a bit time consuiming, and wanted to know of unRAID can keep the existing data, and only format the 3TB for use as a parity disk.

/dev/sdd on /1.0TB type btrfs (rw)

/dev/sda1 on /3.0TB type ext4 (rw,noatime,nodiratime)

/dev/sda2 on /1.0TB2 type ext4 (rw,noatime,nodiratime)

/dev/sdc on /1.5TB type btrfs (rw,noatime,nodiratime,compress=lzo)

/dev/sdb on /2.0TB type ext4 (rw,noatime,nodiratime)

Let me know guys!

PS, if anyone is curious. The system is an Acer easyStore with an a single core Atom running at 1.6GHz with hyper threading. So I know I can't take advantage of Virtualization, but that's fine. I have a little NUC i5 with 512GB of SSD that is super quick and low power for use as an adhoc system for running VMs and Docker (running Ubuntu 14.04.3).

No, I am afraid that you cannot add these drives to unRAID and keep their data intact.  You will have to go through the process of copying their data which is (as you say) time consuming.  When you add these drives to unRAID it will rewrite the partition tables effectively destroying their current contents.
