new permissions tool very slow?

Featured Replies

I just updated my unraid server to v6 and in the upgrade instruction it says to be sure to run the New Permissions tool if you have ever run a version prior to v5.0-rc9.  I have had my server running for years so i started the new permissions tool.

above the "start" button it has a warning that says a new window will open to start a background process and not to close the new window.  So i got the new window which says:

/mnt/cache

/mnt/disk1

processing /mnt/disk1

... chmod -R u-x,go-rwx,go+u,ugo+X /mnt/disk1

... chown -R nobody:users /mnt/disk1

... sync

It has been running for over 4 hours and the contents of that window have not changed.  Is it supposed to take that long?  How long shoudl I expect?

I just don't want to let it just sit there spinning if its not actually doing anything

Depends on how many files you have. Go to Tools - Diagnostics and post the diagnostics zip file and we might be able to see if there are any problems that might slow it down.

unfortunately I cant seem to get the interface to load while the permissions tool is running.  I opened up another tab and went to the ip address of my unraid server and it just sits there and spins and spins.

You can keep waiting on it if you want. It won't hurt anything to close the permissions window. It will just be incomplete and you would have to do it again. If you had ever run the permissions after 5rc9 it probably isn't necessary anyway.

If you can telnet you could just try tailing the syslog using the method in the v5 help link in my sig and see if there are any I/O errors slowing things down.

ok so i did the tail command and just got this:

tail -f /var/log/syslog

I closed the permissions window and now I cant get anywhere else in the interface.  It just hangs indefinitely in the browser no matter what area i try to go to ...

Can you see the flash share over the network? If so, you can get a diagnostics from the command line by typing

diagnostics

and then finding the diagnostics zip file on your flash.

Unfortunately no. If I click on the unfair server in windows explorer or finder it just sits and spins forever. It won't actually show me the shares.

Something seems really hung up.

I even tried to power down from the command line and it just hangs.

so i know it wasn't the best idea but my system seemed unresponsive so I powered it down and rebooted it.  It ran a parity check after reboot and all is well now.  although I haven't tried to run the permissions tool again.

You may not need to. What version did you upgrade from? If you were running one of the stable v5 then nothing about v6 permissions is any different.

If you have an issue with specific folders it is possible to just run it on those folders but you will have to go to the command line, or you could just fix the owner and permissions of a specific folder yourself from the command line with just a couple of commands.

I was running from the latest stable release of v5.x.  I was not having any problems that I am aware of, was just running the tool based on the info in the upgrade guide.  got nervous when it hung my system like that, that there may be something wrong.
