How to install a Windows VM

Featured Replies

Totally new and getting my feet wet

I could not find any forum items to answer my questions so if any experienced user could lead me and answer I would appreciate it.

I am trying to install and implement a Windows VM so I can run MinimServer as there is no plugin or Docker to run MinimServer.

I am hung up with some of the setup items.

Specifically

How and when and where do you load the Windows OS ?

How do you pick  the correct number of cores.

Which HDD should I be designating. Should it also be a the only item designated to that HDD.

I thought I would use VNC from my laptop to control the VM

So, I am just getting me feet wet here too...

What do you mean by how and when and where do you load the Windows OS?  Do you mean where do you put the ISO image of windows?

When you setup the VM in unRAID under VM, you will want to make sure that you have copied the OS ISO file as well as the drivers ISO fils as those fields need to be populated when you are configuring your VM in unRAID.

Picking number of cores...good question.  Mine is just a test VM, so not doing much with it.  I gave it 2 cores.  Maybe someone much smarter than i am can chime in.

I have the ISOs on a share on a drive in the array, but have installed Windows onto a share on the cache drive.  For now, its just a spinning disk as i have not built a new final machine yet.  But i would think that you are better off utilizing a SSD cache drive so that your disks will stop spinning, otherwise they will continue to spin while the VM is running.

I will probably pick up a 250 GB SSD and install the VM there on my final machine.  I doubt i would need that full amount of space for my VM, so i can use it for other things as well.

And yes, you would use VNC from somewhere to control the VM

Thank you, Thank you

I spent hours hammering away at trying to get the drivers to load and the video explained exactly how to do it. It would have been impossible with out Jon's videos.

Everything works perfect except a bit of difficulty with my mouse or touchpad. Sometimes I have 2 cursors on the screen and the one that is actually working does not follow over the entire screen.

After Windows is installed, switch over to using remote desktop to control it.

What Squid said....  ;D

I can't stand using machines over VNC, but use RDP every day with no problems.  Much slicker..

Thanks. Great idea. Much better graphics and resolution. Screen refresh is a bit slow.

The only issue is with windows 7 home is it doesn't officially support remote desktop..

Could use TeamViewer.

Doesn't it? Could have sworn I've used it on Win7 but I don't have any Win7 Home machines...

Nope, you need pro to get RDP.

https://www.raymond.cc/blog/enable-remote-desktop-connection-in-windows-7-home-premium/ as an example of how to patch home.  Haven't tried anything of the sort since XP, as I always had win 7 Ultimate
