LTO4 Tape Backup and .ISO Files - Backup Software advice needed please!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm not sure this is the most appropriate forum, but here goes!

Having introduced an LTO 4 Tape backup to my system, I've been really really happy with it's cost, speed etc but I've just hit my first snag and I'm looking for some help please.

I store .ISO film files. I have allocated one tape per "letter" and have now reached the stage of having done the BIG initial backup and now got a few new ones to add to the backup.

I stuck in the "T" tape and selected an "Incremental" backup so that I only added the new ones. The backup kept failing with nothing added!

I use URANIUM software and contacted their technical department. They say, (without explanation) that you cannot perform an incremental backup on ISO files?????? Each backup tape has to have a full backup run just to add one (large) file!

So gentlefolk,

1. Anybody with any knowledge on this subject?

2. Anybody else using LTO and what software do you use?

Cheers,

Paul

Can't speak for your software but some I have used in the past expects a different tape for the incremental backups.

So you do a full backup on day 1  (Tape 1)

Incremental on day 2 - Backs up what changed since day 1 (Tape 2)

Incremental on day 3 - Backs up what changed since day 2 (Tape 3)

To restore everything to day 3 you need all three tapes.
