How to install OpenELEC (Official) in a VM

Which embedded do you use? Intel or Generic? TIA.

I'm playing with OpenPHT right now.  I used the Generic image but had to play with my settings a bit to get it to boot past the OVMF boot menu (I think I landed on machine type 440fx and disk type SATA).  Virtio drivers seem to be there as my NIC is working with that driver.

So far I am liking this!  I may consider moving away from OE/LE to this as I uses the Plex DB natively (finally ditch SQL and not have to rely on a third party plugin to connect to Plex).  I also love the fact that it support Aeon Nox out of the box.

Exactly! The Aeon Nox theme + OpenPHT are amazing. I'm about to install my first VM, and trying with OpenPHT. Do I just use the LibreELEC  template, upload the generic OpenPHT image, then settings with 440fx, and SATA, then good to go? Sorry for the step-by-step request..

Hopefully with 6.3 they get the iGPU working so I can leave OpenPHT running indefinitely.

Thanks

I tried the iGPU w/ Plex Media Player Embedded and it wasn't pretty (screen flickering, soft reset issues)... its very buggy still, IMO.

Just use the Linux one.  You don't want to use the OE or LE template...that will force a download and configuration of LT's own versions of OE/LE.

Point vdisk1 to the OPHT img file.  Create a 2nd vdisk (raw).  This is where OPHT will install.

Still really impressed!

Now I just need to see if I can get Retroarch installed so my wife can keep her games.  :)  From what I have read this is probably not possible so I may look at a Linux+OPHT+Retroarch solution (rather than OPHT embedded).

I think you need to use your nvidia card in stead of vnc to get it working.

Link to comment

No dice. I've got the graphics card chosen, but nothing shows up on the monitor.

I noticed I have a few mentions to "virtio" in the XML and you had said you used SATA. Anything I need to change in the VM's BIOS?

This is a GPU pass through issue.

Have you passed through the GPU to any other VM's so you know it works?

Link to comment

At first the GPUnwasnt passing through since UNRAID had it as primary. Changed the BIOS and now I was able to make a Windows 10 VM with the GPU card no problem.

So I tried again with the Linux template using OpenPHT generic embedded image and now I get the shell error screen to pass though to the GPU/monitor. Right output. Wrong outcome.

Link to comment

Still can't get the OpenPHT/Linux VM template to boot up. I've successfully used the GPU before in a Windows 10 VM, no problem.

When it does boot up UEFI Interactive Shell appears with "Mapping Table" errors, BLK1 and BLK 0 messages for alias of PciRoot.

Any ideas?

Still can't get the OpenPHT/Linux VM template to boot up. I've successfully used the GPU before in a Windows 10 VM, no problem.

And you changed the disk type to SATA or IDE?  If you are seeing only BLK1 and BLK0, that means that UEFI is unable to load the IMG file.

I quickly created another VM to test and was able to boot directly to the OPHT Installer menu on the first shot.  Here is my XML...
