If you have the powerdown plugin installed

 

powerdown -r

and without the plugin: sudo reboot (or sudo shutdown to shut it down).

i'd be more concerned about a dirty restart straight into a parity check by issuing reboot or shudown

its nothing i like to do but it has been necessary in the past..

 

and indeed... sudo is not needed.. just "shutdown" or "reboot"

Hopefully powerdown will work for you. I've been battling an issue where my server locks up, the system load jumps to triple digits and drives won't unmount. I ended up putting my server on a WebPowerSwitch so I can power cycle it manually, remotely until I get a chance to replace my SAS2LP cards which I believe are contributing to the problem.

It all worked out ok, I also just installed the power down plugin
