What are the best 8x or 16x port RAID controller cards for unRaid 6.1.6?

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I searched and couldn't find a thread which was recent that discussed what all raid cards work currently with the latest version (6.1.6) and if there are any preffered ones. So I apologize if this is a re-post and this has been discussed recently - if anyone could point me to that thread that would be great.

I am currently in the process of switching from a direct to SATA III MB/port multiplier card setup to a RAID card connected setup. I have a the Norco 4224 case and would at some point utilize all the 24 drive bays. So currently in the market for a RAID card (not to buy immediately but maybe in the near future) - as  of right now I'm planning on using the reverse breakout cables as suggested by garycase here, and connect the back plate SFF 8087 to the MB's and port multiplier card's SATA III ports. I assume this would still enable me to use the "Hot-Swap" feature of the drive bays.

However in the future I would like to switch to a RAID card setup - hence the question on what would and would not work with unRaid. All help is appreciated, thanks.

unRAID does not actually need hardware RAID controller, as it is a software implementation of data protection. Thus the HBA type cards from Supermicro and Avago(LSI) are popular.

If you search for other 4224 builds, you will find the cards used;

IBM M1115 (Flashed IT Mode) Raid Card

Dell Perc H310 Flash to IT mode

LSI9211-8i

Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8

I'm in a  similar boat - already had some HP gear that I thought should work, got everything installed and no drives detected. Now I have to go back and buy some HBAs.

My main concern is support for 4TB drives and a card to support my external disk enclosure (external Mini-SAS).

Internally I think I'm going with the Dell PERC H310

Externally the LSI Logic SAS9200-8E (LSI00188)

Based on the above the PERC H310 is compatible, but are there any incompatibilities with 4TB drives? The SAS9200-8E I'm not 100% sure, or I could do the LSI Logic 9212-4i4e for a similar price.

Any insight or recommendations? Thanks!
