I ran a preclear on two drives that I had laying around and was curious to know if they were okay to use in my array. Are these drives okay to use? Here is the log files from the first disk: Disk: /dev/sdc smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-linux-3.17.4-unRAID] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF) Device Model: ST3000DM001-9YN166 Serial Number: W1F0AXV6 LU WWN Device Id: 5 000c50 04a37a790 Firmware Version: CC4C User Capacity: 3,000,592,982,016 bytes [3.00 TB] Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical Rotation Rate: 7200 rpm Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: ATA8-ACS T13/1699-D revision 4 SATA Version is: SATA 3.0, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 6.0 Gb/s) Local Time is: Fri Apr 3 11:19:32 2015 EDT ==> WARNING: A firmware update for this drive is available, see the following Seagate web pages: http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/207931en http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/223651en SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. Squid
W1F0AXV6 - RMA / throw out now. It has an end-to-end error, for which a single failure is enough to throw the drive into failing now status. S1F06DXL - 896 reallocated sectors prior to preclear, 936 after preclear. The platters are starting to degrade. I would never trust a drive with that many reallocated sectors, even if the value didn't change. (But that's your own judgement. Most drives have a few thousand spare sectors) Quote Link to comment
