December 17, 201510 yr I installed the latest 6.1.6 version on a clean Supermicro system. Everything went smoothly. I activated it with a key and that worked fine. It downloaded the key and was happy. Before doing anything else, I switched the LAN connection to static using an IP that's blocked from internet access by my firewall. The console immediate displayed: "sending signal ARLM to pid 1527... waiting for pid 1527 to exit" and seems stuck there. The web GUI, at the new static IP, reverted back to the "you must register before you can continue screen" ... not good? I tried copying and pasting the same key and the entire GUI just locked up as if the web server is no longer responding. Is the licensing so draconian with Unraid you can't change the IP and/or run it without internet access? The key difference between my configuration and most people is I have some IPs blocked from internet access and moved it to an IP blocked from the WAN. I have no problem paying for worthwhile software. But it's not acceptable for a NAS to be dependent on a live internet connection 24/7 just to operate correctly. If someone could clarify unRaid's internet requirements, and let me know if I did something wrong, that would be great? Thanks!
December 17, 201510 yr Community Expert As far as I know unRAID does not require internet access. However what it DOES require is accurate time, so if you have blocked internet access (so that a NTP server cannot be accessed) you may need to specify a local NTP server.
December 17, 201510 yr I just tried it remotely on my system. Enabled parental controls so that the one server cannot access the internet, reboot, and it still came up. (Not at home, so I can't see what's displayed on the monitor) Although using parental controls may not be the same as outright blocking the server from the internet (although I have confirmed it can't access the internet at all)
December 17, 201510 yr Author Thanks for both replies so far. It would be ideal to have a definitive answer from someone at Lime? It might be related to this being a new install while a more established installation might not have the same problem. But, I have to say, it doesn't enhance my confidence in unRaid. I've never seen this sort of behavior with any similar NAS operating systems.
December 17, 201510 yr Community Expert Thanks for both replies so far. It would be ideal to have a definitive answer from someone at Lime? Have you tried emailing Limetech support? The forums are primarily for community support - questions in them may not always get noticed by Limetech.
December 17, 201510 yr Don't know if this a fluke or not, but a stock unRAID system is made to boot without Internet access. When installing plugins or dockers, it might become a different story though.
December 17, 201510 yr Author This is stock 6.1.6 with no plugins (beyond the stock Dynamix UI which is apparently part of unRaid). And I didn't try emailing Limetech because I'm not yet a paying a customer. Commercial NAS units from Synology, Drobo, Qnap, etc. run behind a firewall just fine without internet access. They might complain about DNS, NTP, being unable to check for updates, etc, but they at least otherwise work as expected. And all the open source NAS solutions I have experience with also work just fine. This is my first experience of a NAS falling its face because it can't reach the internet. And given I got the licensing screen again, I'm guessing it might be related to some sort of licensing/copy protection scheme in unRaid?
December 17, 201510 yr Probably something specific to the trial license, never had a problem booting my pro licenses without Internet. Send an email to Limetech and ask about it, it is certainly a reasonable question for a potential customer to have.
December 17, 201510 yr As the trial license is time limited, I suspect that this has something to do with the time check and if it fails to check the time it considers the trial license expired and puts up the registration web page again. But as had been suggested only Limetech can give a definitive answer.
