20 bay unraid build advice

Featured Replies

Hello

So I've been looking at using unraid for a while now but I thought I would post to ask for some advice as to what hardware to go for.  I was going to go for a Asrock C2750D4I however I've seen lots of threads about people having issues with the Marvell controllers so haven't invested yet.

I now want to build a 20 bay chassis in a tower case. I plan to use 5x 3.5-inch in 3x 5.25-inch enclosures so I can have space for lots of drives. I currently have a bunch of WD Greens and Reds, a mix of 2 and 3 TBs (approx 9 drives)

With regards to use its just going to be for storage, no plans to do any virtualisation and for a budget ideally maximum of £800. I was liking the sound of SOC motherboards however not sure what expansions cards to use that are compatible with unraid 6.

Thanks in advance.

The Antec 1200 will get you 12 5.25 bays that you could put 4 cages that hold 5 drives a piece, runs about 150$ + shipping.

My build uses and Antec 900 that could hold up 15 + 1 SSD but I don't anticipate needing that many for my needs.  Currently running with 6 drives + 1 ssd.

Can anyone recommend a motherboard / SAS expander / Sata controller that's compatible with Unraid 6?

i used a Lian-Li PC-A77 for my build.  Tower with 20 disks, like you want.  I used the 4 x 5-in-3 cages (all aluminium).  Works great, never have overheating issue!

My board is a serverboard of the Supermicro brand (maybe too much if you don't need virtual or dockers).  Here are my specs.

CASE: Lian-Li PC-A77F

4 x iStarUSA BPN-DE350SS-RED 5-in-3 Module

MB: Supermicro  S10SLL-F-O

Memory: Samsung ECC (32GB)

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240v3 3.40GHz

PCI-e card:  2 x LSI MegaRAID 9240-8i Flashed to LT

PSU: SeaSonic X Series X-850 GOLD

UPS: CyberPower 1350VA Pure Sine LCD UPS.
