[Support] Owncloud, Vpn vs. direct access

Featured Replies

So i have installed owncloud and i want to be able to access it from the outside.

I tried installing openvpn and it works fine, but sadly theres no client for my windows phone.

I am wondering, why is it safer to use a vpn when it still has a loginscreen facing the ouside web the same as owncloud does?(as shown in the pictures) and i opened ports for both applications.

If you have configured OpenVPN to only require login and not require certificate, then you are doing it wrong and that is not secure.

There are many ways you can take this debate... But it boils down to what you have "exposed" to the public. If OwnCloud is public, then you have exposed Apache (presumably) and if you only have OpenVPN(AS) running, then you only have OpenVPN services exposed. Which one is more likely to be exploited? Probably Apache. But you never know.

I run OwnCloud on a public site with a cert from letsencrypt. I feel that this is safe enough for my purposes. I especially don't want to have a VPN client running all the time on my phone.
