Headless unRAID with GPU Passthrough works... temporarily.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've built a system with the intention of doing occasional gaming atop a HTPC.

As such, I'm trying to pass-through the only GPU (no integration) to a virtual instance of Windows 10.

I can build and start the VM without problem.

Win10 instillation goes without trouble (including several reboots).

Get to desktop and install relevant drivers, specifically VirtIO and AMD's Crimson.

Reboot after Crimson install, and the monitor no longer receives signal.

I must then force-stop the VM and shut down unRAID from web gui to restore a working video output (for unRAID).

I've updated my Motherboard's Firmware, checked all settings to enable IOMMU anywhere I could find... no joy.

I've tried running a fresh VM without Crimson, several quick reboots successful, install Crimson and reboot to no monitor data.

I've tried (fresh VM), and avoid Crimson entirely, and while I'm looking for the Steam installer, the monitor goes blank (no signal).

I even tried a Fedora VM, and had a worse problem.  Boot to live image is good, OS installs fine, post-install reboot causes a hard crash:

no signal to monitor, unresponsive unRAID web gui, unable to telnet into unRAID.

I am forced to cut power, and ran a parity check (no errors) after.

I'm new to unRAID and passthroughs, so I don't really know what data you need to help me out.

Just let me know, and I'll quote logs or whatever else.

Thanks!

PCI Device list looks good.  My GPU isn't shared with anything else.

AMD GPUs have numerous issues supporting bus resets.  Newer devices tend to be more prone to this. Unfortunately it's a hardware specific issue.

Drat!  So it's pretty much hopeless with this GPU?

I'll be more careful when it comes time to upgrade.

Drat!  So it's pretty much hopeless with this GPU?

I'll be more careful when it comes time to upgrade.

I don't know if this helps but I recently had my girlfriends sons pc for "fixing" and he was suggesting that his monitor had "broken" as all he was getting was a blank screen.

After testing the monitor with my laptop, monitor was fine I proceeded to test the PC. Full specs are unimportant but it was running a Radeon 7950 GPU with CCC the last time I had hold of it.

Recently however he "updated" to the latest driver. The new Crimson. Following this update is when the screen started going "blank" at the logon screen. It turns out the boot was that quick he never noticed the post and the windows loading image.

I narrowed it down to a conflict between Intel's Internal GPU driver on the motherboard (which was enabled at some point in the life of the OS - probably before install of the dedicated GPU) and the new AMD driver. So I did the following:

1. Downgraded the AMD driver to the last Catalyst version. This worked but I didn't like it as I wanted to allow for his drivers to be upgraded and avoid accidental upgrade and no doubt me getting the PC back again to "Fix".

2. I switched to the motherboard GPU to allow me "access" to the OS. (You could achieve this in the VM by using VNC). Then I removed all GPU drivers (and associated files so the OS couldn't automatically install them again) by using a driver removal tool. I then rebooted straight into bios and disabled onboard graphics (thus never allowing the OS to recognise the GPU and attempt to install drivers) and booted into the OS. I then went to the AMD website and downloaded the latest version of the GPU driver and Crimson software and installed. No problems since.

I don't know your setup but if your issue is similar in any way perhaps you can amend the above procedure to help you.

Happy Holidays!

So I tried again, this time I let the VM crash on the Crimson post-install boot, then power cycled the whole machine and restarted the VM.

I got ~5 min of run time with the VM before another crash.

This time I watched the syslog:

Gotta admit, this looks a mess to me.

How much ram do you assign to the VM? 8gb in total in the server?

You have an out of memory message in the syslog.

Yes, 8gb total in the system.  I was wanting to assign 6gb to the VM, but it seems I pushed it to ~6.4gb.

Maybe leaving 1.6gb starved unRAID?

I'm running a Plex server and Deluge, but there were no active streams of Plex.

I'll drop the VM to 4gb and try again.

Thanks, Saarg.

Dropping the quantity of memory assigned to the VM has stabilized the system.  I've run for several hours without problem, and did some gaming to test things out.  My Windows 10 VM is now functional with pass-through.

Unfortunately, I am still unable to start-up the VM properly after a shut-down.  After a fresh boot of the host system, VM works fine.  Stop the VM and re-start leads to 'No Signal' on my monitor.  For now, I could simply leave the VM running always.  In the future I'd like to be able to run different VMs in series, and being able to shut down properly would help.

I watched the log during an unsuccessful startup:

And, later, from a successful VM startup (following a host system reboot)

That is most likely your GPU not fully supporting pass through. You might want to try updating the vbios on the GPU to see if that solves anything.

That might be a harder fix.  The techpowerup.com sellection only has one driver listed, and it is 'unverified.'

I made a support ticket with XFX, so, we'll see how that goes.
