December 25, 201510 yr I have a disk that red balled earlier today. So I unassigned and reassigned it and started to rebuild it. Within the first few minutes, I started to see errors and the disk went offline again. I tried this 3 times with the same result each time. I then decided to pre-clear the disk prior to rebuilding it. It ran through the entire process without error: ========================================================================1.15b == ST2000DM001-1ER164 S4Z03RKQ == Disk /dev/sdh has been successfully precleared == with a starting sector of 64 ============================================================================ ** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sdh /tmp/smart_finish_sdh ATTRIBUTE NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS RAW_VALUE Raw_Read_Error_Rate = 115 114 6 ok 94533280 Seek_Error_Rate = 65 64 30 ok 3450052 Spin_Retry_Count = 100 100 97 near_thresh 0 End-to-End_Error = 100 100 99 near_thresh 0 Airflow_Temperature_Cel = 72 76 45 ok 28 Temperature_Celsius = 28 24 0 ok 28 No SMART attributes are FAILING_NOW 0 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after pre-read in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors pending re-allocation did not change. 0 sectors had been re-allocated before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors are re-allocated at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors re-allocated did not change. I have not yet tried again to reassign/rebuild the disk again (currently watching A Christmas Story). If the data rebuild fails again, what could be the reason? John

Difference being is that during a preclear, only one drive is active. Ultimately, a lot can happen to make it fail. The diagnostics should give better clues
December 25, 201510 yr Author Data rebuild completed and the disk is back online. Now the wait and see game. John
