December 26, 201510 yr My unraid system has been going well for about a month now, but today there was the sound of a hard drive powering off and on a few times. I checked it out and I thought my parity drive may have some issues. So I shut down my array, took the drive out and performed a days worth of smart tests, read/write/verify tests, hdd controller checking, and I see nothing out of the ordinary other than the seek and read error rate counts have gone up drastically since being in the unraid machine. The drive was brand new when it was put in. The sata cables being used are the 4 that came with the motherboard. What is happening? Do I need to rma the drive? share-diagnostics-20151226-1704.zip
December 26, 201510 yr If you're referring to the Seagate drive, it's normal to see high raw read and seek error rates => Seagate reports the raw numbers for these, unlike most other manufacturers, who only report the normalized (uncorrected) values. As for why the drive would power up & down a lot ... that could be a power issue; or you could have the spindown timer set too low, so it's spinning down & back up due to activity in the system. Are you using a high-quality single-rail power supply?
December 26, 201510 yr Author The power supply is a Thermaltake 700Watt psu, LT-700AL2NL. The drive isnt spinning down, Nothing is telling it to. It sounds similar to power loss than graceful shutdown. the logs show ATA bus errors, hard link resets and 1.5Gbps connection speed.
December 26, 201510 yr I assume you've confirmed that both the power and data cables are firmly seated. You may also want to try a different power connection from the power supply. If that doesn't resolve it, I'd RMA the drive.
December 26, 201510 yr Author Turned out to be 2 faulty sata connectors on my motherboard. Something during the manufacturing process left the little pin surfaces dirty and dark brown.
December 26, 201510 yr Glad it's resolved. Loose, corroded, or dirty cable connections can cause a lot of issues.
