New build w/ Unraid 6 for use with dockers and VMs (incl. gaming)

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

Looking to build a new ..euh...build because I want to get into using VMs and perhaps even try game streaming.

I've already managed to compose two possible builds.

Build 1:

----------

cpu i7-6700K (4 cores)

mb Asus Z170 PRO GAMING

ram Corsair LPX 2x16GB

GPU1 (unraid) builtin

GPU2 (gaming) MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G

cache Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

Build 2:

----------

cpu i7-5820K (6 cores)

mb Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4

ram Corsair LPX 2x16GB

GPU1 (unraid) MSI GeForce 210 1GB

GPU2 (gaming) MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G

cache Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

I have a few dockers running (sickbeard, sabnzbd, Plex, makemkv). I would like to run a VM for gaming and at least one more for some file management tasks, etc.)

I probably won't have the VMs running at the same time but switch them on and off when I need them so I don't know if they could have the same cores assigned?

The benefits of the 5820 setup are of course the extra 2 cores and the extra memory slots on the X99 mb.

The 6700 setup is a little cheaper though and has the base GPU built in. I believe it also produces less heat and consumes less power.

Anyone want to throw some feedback my way about which build would suit me best?

Thanks!

Are you having any other hard drives in this system? At the moment it looks like you'd be better off just running a desktop? You're going to probably lose 1 core to UnRaid

Yes, I do. I have 9 disks in the array and a cache drive. Forgot to mention that.  :)
