Which Docker Application Version do I get?

Featured Replies

I've installed the "Community Applications" plugin that makes adding dockers much easier.

I see multiple versions of the same applications. For example, there are 3 different dockers of "Transmission." I notice that they are from different authors. How do I select the best one? Are they all the same?

PhAzE Transmission is actually a plugin rather than a docker.

I personally use gfjardim because it was the first available and it has worked OK for me so I haven't bothered to change.

That said, I recommend linuxserver because they have a team of developers and more dedicated support.

Thank you! Is there a general way to find out which version to get other than asking experienced members their opinion? I have other docker applications that I want to get that also have multiple versions (Sickbeard, Couchpotato, Deluge, etc).

I suppose I could see which dockers have the most active support threads as a surrogate for which ones are the best.

That's your best bet

Wouldnt that only tell you which docker has the most problems?

Lol, I suppose you are right  ;)

Then you should avoid linuxserver's apps like the plague.  I mean, separate support threads for each and every container.  Must be something seriously wrong with them then

:P  (expecting to now be banned from their IRC)

Probably nothing for it but to read the threads and ask others. I think the vast majority can be expected to work when setup correctly. There may be some details different, such as adding VPN support, and of course binhex uses a different base image, Arch Linux, instead of phusion (based on ubuntu if I remember). Using dockers with different base images can add a little overhead vs using all dockers with common base.

I decided to go for dockers by linuxserver team when possible, I really like the idea of a dedicated team of talent instead of a single, albeit motivated/smart developer working on a project. Thanks all.

Well I think that's a good choice.  ;D

Although got to say binhex is pretty amazing too.

Excluding VPN, there is no fundamental difference between any of them except for auto-updating on every boot (linuxserver), and the level of support given by the maintainers.  When there is multiple options available for a particular app, I usually steer people towards either linuxserver or binhex (or PhaZe if you prefer a plugin delivery method) because those all have outstanding levels of support.  The real defining difference between linuxserver and binhex is that linuxserver will autoupdate the app everytime it loads whereas binhex's version's will not.  Entirely a personal preference as to what you want.

FWIW I'm now using linuxserver (was using gfjardim/needo)  Switched over when I redid all my apps not because there was any issues with gfjardim, but I like the support and the guys (including my arch-nemesis) over at ls.io  But I would also have no reservations whatsoever about switching to binhex either.
