Unraid stuck in a boot-loop when inserting a GFX card

Featured Replies

Hi

A fairly new user of Unraid here and so far I love it. But it seems that I have a little problem with my installation...

Everything worked just fine, the server was chugging along nicely so I decided that I'll add a graphics card for my VMs.

And herein lies the problem... Whenever I insert a GFX (I'll abbreviate it because I suspect that I'll be using this word a lot) card my system proceeds through POST to booting from my USB key and then it reboots itself. It goes to the second boot parameter (bzroot states ok) and then quickly resets itself and loops until I yank out the card. Safe mode produces the same results.

1. I have tried switching PSUs as my first guess even though it's a new one. Heck I even checked the voltages just to be sure and all was fine.

2. I have tried three GFX cards. The first was an old Geforce 6200 or something. It didn't work but I didn't think nothing of it. The card is old. Then I tried a PCIX card a NVS290 (hey I just need a picture nothing fancy for now) and it didn't work. So I went with my old and trusty AMD Saphire HD4850. No dice. The system just loops.

3. I have tried a different linux distro just to make sure that it was not my system. Linux Mint worked like a champ.

My MB is a Supermicro X11SAE and I have 16GB of ECC RAM (Supermicro FTW) and a Xeon E3-1245 v5 CPU (hey don't judge I was strapped for cash).

I could try with a GF630 I have at work but since I'm three for three I may as well be missing something.

I have googled as per my usually troubleshooting guidelines but couldn't find a single person with my problem.

Cheers

P.S.: Adding my system log although it doesn't show and errors because it crashes during boot.

Hmm it seems that I have solved my own problem (sort of). I hope that someone can explain why it worked because I sure as bloody hell can't.  :o

So here's what I did:

I placed the card in and reset my BIOS to defaults hoping that it would change something. It didn't.

Then I started to wonder what would happen if I disabled my integrated GPU and left the system with only one card that it could use. And it worked. Disabling the card and leaving the system with only one card actually worked. Then I started experimenting with the cards. Whenever I placed more than one card into the system the whole OS crashed. No tweaking helped. I have tried setting cards as primaries (something my BIOS really didn't like because the setting kept reverting) and I have tried switching slots which did bupkis.

Then (my fingers bleeding from all the removals of my sharp cards) I just decided that I'll let one in and then experiment with enabling and disabling of my integrated card. And I enabled my card (it switched to default like it was set from the start) and lo and behold the system didn't crash. I then disabled the integrated card and add another card in just to see if I'm delirious (or just severely dehidrated) and it also worked. So now I have a Quadro 290 and a GF6200 (top of the line baby!!!) working in my server.

Basically I did nothing, nada, zilch. I have checked every BIOS setting for changes I could of made and even made a few adjustments to some of them but the part where it constantly crashed with a card now goes through just fine. I even tried crashing it on purpose (yeah I'm like that) but it just works.

Does anyone have any insights into all this?
