January 27, 200719 yr Hi I have successfully booted unraid basic, but can't remotely logon via telnet Tower from command prompt. I get "could not open connection to host, on port 23. I have tried many varied attempts and need help. I'm using P5LD2-VM 2.0 MB and have orange and green light on the gb port and intermittent activity. I have completely shutdown antivirus and windows firewall to no avail. Any suggestions? How is the management utility accessed directly from the unraid server? I have entered login with "root" and it waits for some sort of command, I guess? Thank you
January 27, 200719 yr To be honest I would not recommend running unRAID without some rudimentary knowledge of linux. But there is some info here - http://www.lime-technology.com/wordpress/?page_id=33
January 27, 200719 yr Author Thanks for the link and information. I think my main concern is the port configurations. I can't connect and the commands in the link you sent, which I had run a couple of days ago, seem to be logging in nature and not executable and don't appear to help on why I can't connect. So, you sound experienced with linux, how would you approach this network connection issue? What Linux commands do I need to know to correct the connection issue? Also, where would be a good place to find list of other commands? Thanks You Again!
January 27, 200719 yr Sounds like you might have a firewall on your PC which is blocking port 23. But he said he cannot get to the management web-page either, so it is blocking port 80 too? Not likely. Far more likely is the cable connected to the new unRaid motherboard is defective, or the eithernet controller on the new motherboard is disabled in the bios... or defective. One way to tell is to log in on the console as "root" and then at the comand prompt type: ping www.google.com (Type control-C to stop pinging) If the ping is successful, odds are the cable and controller are OK. If not, then check the bios to be sure it is enabled, and then try a different cable. As far as I know, there is no way to manage and start the unRaid array from the command line login. You must use the web-interface management page from a browser on another PC on your LAN. Joe L.
January 28, 200719 yr Author First I would like to apologize for being a little lazy and secondly THANK YOU guys for the help. I switched out several factory cables and nothing. I wasn't even sure if I could ping from unraid, because of the log info I received from the tower yesterday. Knowing I could ping, I ended up making a couple of new cables to test and I got it up and running. Great community!!!! Thanks again !!!!
