My First unRAID build

Featured Replies

Hey all, after i short circuited my ageing proliant N36L while swapping an HDMI cable when it was powered on killing the board, i decided it was time to invest in a proper server solution that i can upgrade and expand as time goes on.

Reading the various forums i was pleased to see unRAID development was progressing well and the features offered helped me make my (easy) decision to build an unRAID server.

Its been a fantastic experience, really straight forward to setup and get going adding my data to the array at around 50-55MB/Sec. Parity sync takes about 5.5hrs on a 4TB.

One issue i ran into and seriously spent way more time on than was needed was when setting which data drives to add i picked the available x2 drives one formatted xfs quickly but the other one kept showing unmountable. I removed the disk after multiple format attempts, booted up linux Mint to see the drive has a ZFS partition on it. I deleted that and formatted to EXT4 re-installed that into unRAID and tried again...nope! Still unmountable, reading about ZFS file system i was scratching my head trying to understand the quickest way to remove the first and last bits of data on the drive so unRAID could format the drive properly. Windows formatted it OK also with NTFS...nope still cant format it.

The solution was simple, allocate the drive order again selecting the x2 drives vise-versa. Simples! right? :P

Anyway iam very happy with my new server and very pleased with unRAID, got multiple dockers installed and configured thanks to the clear info and great community feedback here.

Thanks!

Posts like this give me hope.....  ;D

So many criticise that there's no information available for new Unraid users.....  ::)

Indeed, UnRAID on the most part tends to just work.  I've not seen many things that it's not happy with.

It's interesting to see a confirmed compatibility with Skylake.

I upgraded my ancient Core 2 Duo E6600 with 1GB RAM to an i3 6100 with 16GB RAM. It works great and it's quite a bit faster!
