October 21, 200916 yr Attach below is my syslog and I would appreciate it if someone could take a quick look through it and look for any "odd" things. The server has, for the most part, been running fine. The USB thumb drive got set to read only for some reason and I believe I fixed that, but I am getting a lot of errors from sdi (disk5) in my array, Since the flash drive got set to read only the shutdown was not quite clean and a parity check started on restart. It finished just fine and all my disks are still running but there were 414 errors found with that disk during the process. I have run a short smartctl test on the drive and all is fine there, but I am going to run a long test on it when I get a chance later tonight. I am not sure if this is a drive problem, cable problem, or a combination of both. The drive has been running OK for the most part, but the reallocated sector count seems to be going up recently (last month or so; especially after a hard shutdown that I did not cause). Thanks for the assitance
October 22, 200916 yr The long SMART test is probably your best next step. There are quite a few media errors, clustered in 3 early areas. The uninformative device errors appear to be associated with the media errors. At this point, it does look like a drive problem, but I would trust the SMART reports most, especially whatever trends you see when comparing them. I don't have any ideas as to the USB resets, quite a lot of them, but no related errors anywhere that I saw. If it's installed in front, try installing it in back, or vice-versa.
October 22, 200916 yr Author Thanks for taking a look RobJ. The long smart test has been start and I will report back later on what it finds. As far as the USB Drive reset thing; it has always done that and I have never had it cause a problem. The drive is plugged into the back right now but I may try it in the front next time I shut the server down. Thanks again.
October 22, 200916 yr I forgot to mention one very minor thing. I believe you still have a SATA150 jumper on your Seagate 750GB drive, but it's probably not noticeably limiting your speeds.
October 23, 200916 yr Author OK if anyone would like to look at this long smart report and give me some input it would be much appreciated!
October 23, 200916 yr OK if anyone would like to look at this long smart report and give me some input it would be much appreciated! The most recent "long" test was terminated with a "read" failure with over 90% of the disk remaining to be tested. 279 sectors have been re-allocated, and 30 more are pending re-allocation. Since the "long" test is not able to complete, I'd say the drive is a prime candidate for replacement. Joe L.

I figured that would be the prognosis, as I have basically come to the same conclusion. I will get started on trying to get this drive replaced, it still has a warranty from Seagate and if I send them this SMART Report I don't think I will have a problem.
