itimpi
unRAID is not a traditional RAID system! There is a good write-up in the online documentation on how it is different. One key difference is that all parity information is written to a single drive (with an option for a second parity drive coming in the 6.2 release). Therefore if you do not have a parity drive your files are not protected against a data drive failing. Link to comment
Ximerousgaming
Wait then how does one parity protect multiple drives? I am installing parity right now. Link to comment
itimpi
Wait then how does one parity protect multiple drives? I am installing parity right now. RAID5 does that quite happily, so as such it is not a new concept! It is just that with RAID5 the parity information is spread across multiple drives rather than a single drive as is the unRAID case. The use of parity in unRAID is discussed in some detail here in the online documentation. Link to comment
