Corrupted Movies

Featured Replies

My movies have some how gotten corrupt. The movies are watchable but as you're watching the movie at random intervels the movie cuts to another movie that I own then back to the original movie. It's as if someone went in spliced out part of the movies and inserted a different movie. I've checked a hand full of movies on one drive and most all of them seem affected by this. I've even I have some 7TB of HDD and 700+ movies. I haven't gone through it thoroughly to see if all drive are affected. I'll know I'll need more info but I guess I'm starting my post to see what people have to say.

<problem>My car is making a noise it never made before... What part do I need to buy to fix it.    I also know you'll need more info... I'll try another car to compare.</problem>

You gave nothing that would describe the actual issue.  Based on your description it is likely to end up being somewhere on your media player, in your network, or on the server.  It could be any combination of them, since you have over 7TB of movies.  It could be in the network drivers of the media player, or in the router or switch... It could even be multiple machines on the LAN with the same IP address and mangled packets.    It could be power supply related, or memory related, or even the mother board.  It could be how you ripped the movies originally... About the only thing I would rule out is the monitor and mouse.

Did I help you any?    I hate to say it, but you really need to provide more details to be able to get help.    We are often asked to be psychic... able to identify problems with no clues or information.  We're good, but not that good.

Before you do anything... at all... post a syslog.  Then, wait for the analysis.... RobJ is really good at looking at the syslogs...  It might have clues...  Second step, do a memory test, it might result in clues.  Step 3, after you reboot, is it still happening?  what tools are you using to move files around, etc.  It might be corrupting files.  What are you using to rip movies? Did they ever play correctly with the same media player.  (Many older methods did NOT properly rip a title, but pieced together what it thought were the correct segments of movies. )

I've got more titles than you, and I've never seen anything like what you are describing.  What version of unRAID software are you running?    Have you run any disk diagnostics?  Any SMART reports?  Any file-system checks?  Have you made any modifications to the stock unRAID? Added any packages?

Without these answers, nobody will be able to give you much more advice than I've already done.  The problem is somewhere...  just like the noise in my car.

Did I make you angry or what?

Ok here's the deal... I realize I didn't post enough info. I even stated that I didn't. I'm not a retard here. I've been ripping movies for 5 years and yes my movies were fine until i transfered them to this crappy raid system that screwed up all my work. I was angry before, now i'm pissed. Please don't bother posting if have nothing relevant to say.

What you describe is likely not corruption, but a performance or congestion problem.

Try:

- playing the movie on your desktop from unRAID

- copying the movie back to your PC, and play on the desktop.

- re-rip one that is corrupt, and copy it from desktop to unraid, and back, and to a bitwise compare.

I know you are in a panic state, but now is not the time to panic, but to analyze.  Hence the request for information we can use to assist you.

Never said you were... , but nobody can assist without the technical details to help with the diagnosis.

I can easily say that no other reports of something similar have been reported in the past 4 years I've been assisting people.  Yes, we've had corrupted files... and in EVERY case, it was hardware related.  It has been memory, motherboard's with early nforce chipsets, network cards, disk drives themselves, and power supplies.  Every one was difficult to diagnose...

We have no idea if the movies ever played properly when you transferred them to the unRAID server, or if this is something new and they played properly before on the same configuration?  You really need to provide the details requested.    As I said, it could be almost anything... but first we need to isolate the issue.  Is it file-system corruption? Or is it occurring in your router/network switch?

Step 1, provide a syslog.  Attach it to your next post.  Instructions are in the wiki under troubleshooting.

I apologize for being a bit short on my initial response... I'll do what I can to help, and so will others... once you supply some details.  Since this is your very first post on the forum, we cannot assume anything... We have no idea of your experience level, your usage, your hardware, your network, or anything, so expect a lot of questions.

The only thing remotely close to what you are describing I've seen once many years ago on a badly messed up Windows-98 disk.

Where were your movies residing before you copied them to the unRaid server?

Do you still have any of these movies at that original location?

If so then check if there is the same kind of corruption at that original location.

It is very likely that the corruption was already there even before you started copying all that stuff to your new unRaid server.

0) If you have nothing relevant to troubleshooting the problem, please don't post.

1) Post a syslog.

2) Detail every bit of your unRaid server (software and hardware), your clients (software and hardware), your network (hardware), and media files (size, type, bitrates of video and audio streams).

About the only thing I would rule out is the monitor and mouse.

LOL....<3 Joe L.

The problem was solved.  It did turn out to be the monitor.

I'm not aware of this kind of corruption taking place before.  I hope we can get this sorted out.  Here are some questions for you:

- What is the format of these movies, ie, normal DVD or Blu-ray, ISO's or files?

- If you play back the same movie, does it 'jump' to a different movie always at the same place?

- If you play the movie that got jumped to, does it play back fine?

- What version unRAID OS are you running?

- Are you accessing movies via direct disk share, or user share?

- If through user share, do you see same behavior if you access via direct disk share?
