January 17, 201610 yr Hey there, welcome to the post of my super quiet (and my first) unRAID build! First my components: - Intel Xeon E3-1246v3 (4C/8T) - MSI Z97-G43 - 4x 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport (DDR3 1600MHz) - 2x 2TB WD Red (which I had laying around from my last Windows Server powered NAS) - 4TB WD Red - 6TB WD Red (as parity) - 250GB Samsung 850 Evo (from the old NAS; I use it for Docker and VMs) - be quiet! Straight Power 500W modular - Fractal Define R5 - a random USB 3.0 PCIe card I had laying around ------Cooled with: - be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 - 4x be quiet! Silent Wings 2 PWM 140mm So now you think: "kid, you should use a server/workstation board and ECC memory for your Xeon and use a storage controller!" But I was not able to do this beause of my budget (I am 15 Years old) and I needed the 32GB of RAM and the 4C Xeon with HT because I am running: - Teamspeak 3 Docker - Syncthing Docker - Plex Docker - MySQL Docker - 3x mcmyadmin Docker (Yes, I am a Minecraft-kid ) - Windows 10 VM for Freestyler (DMX control software; I have some DMX-lights in my Room) - Ubuntu 15.10 VM - Windows Server 2012r2 VM - CentOS 7 VM (for CSGO-Server) Now you say that I need more then one Gigabit-Port on the Server, because I am running so much things... I bought already 2 PCIe cards but they are not shipped yet. I'll post some pictures the next days! It would be great if some of you leave a comment and give me feedback about this build!
January 17, 201610 yr Author That power supply has 4 +12V Rails so definitely not recommended. My big problem is that the power supply needs to be as quiet as possible (because the server is standing in my room) and able to run 24/7. Some friends of me use this power supply over years now for 24/7 and had no problems. And over my experience and the experience of others (e.g my uncle which studied informatics) the nuber of rails dosen't matter. Why wouldn't you recomment a power supply with 4 rails?
January 18, 201610 yr Kid, use a server board if you want. But one piece of advice... Listen to trurl....
January 18, 201610 yr Multi rail PSUs are a disaster. They're all ancient designs that should have been abandoned long ago. Modern PCs only really need 12v, so you want a big fat single 12v supply, not different little 12v and 5v rails.
January 18, 201610 yr The reason multi rail PSUs are discouraged is that the hard disk power connectors only get a small fraction of the power. In a single rail design, power is equally available to any component. For just a few drives, the PSU may work fine, but as the drive count increases, the drive power rails will be starved for power, while other rails may be lightly used. I wouldn't freak that the PSU sucks and had to be replaced immediately, but at a minimum you need to understand how much power is available to your drives and at what drive count you are starting to push that limit.
January 18, 201610 yr Author But my big problem is that the power supply hast to be really quiet because all is in the room where I sleep and I have no alternative to this. I understand that 4 +12V rails arent the best solution for a storage server but for me it works that all works how it is supposed to be. And my 5 drives are all powered well. I know perople who run a "server" with this power supply with 10+ drives.
January 18, 201610 yr I took a quick look and that power supply has 2 x 12V rails at 18A each. You should be fine with 4 platters and a SSD. For more drives, you could do a cut and splice to use the 12V from a PCIe connector to power a SATA cable instead.
January 18, 201610 yr Author I think if I upgrade my hard drives I would buy the "better" model of the be quiet! power supplies which has an switch for multi- or single-rail operation.
January 19, 201610 yr Most newer well designed power supply's are quiet anyway because unless you're putting load on them the fan will never even spin anyway. I have a Corsair HX750w with 10 WD Reds in my rig and I don't think i've ever seen the PS fan spin.
January 19, 201610 yr Exactly. My Corsair AX760 Doesn't make a sound and I'm assuming when the fan needs to turn on it will and when it does I can only guess its because it needs to. Can't beat the 7year Warranty either.
January 19, 201610 yr Author They look great but were both over my budget for the complete build. But for an upgrade they seem to be great!
