January 20, 201610 yr So I've been setting unRAID (6.1.7) up for the first time and as a part of that process I have been running a 3 cycle pre-clear on 2 Seagate 8Tb drives - a long process! The array has never been configured or run. When I came home this evening the second cycle was at 98%. I check progress via my Macbook (connecting to our home router over Wifi, the unRAID box is cabled to the router). After dinner I tried to load http://tower.local but the request in the browser just keeps spinning I reset my Wifi and tried cabling the Macbook in to rule out any network issues. At the end of the day I can see my unRAID box in finder and can navigate to the flash disk. I re-connected the unRAID box to a screen to see the attached on the screen versus the usual tower login line. I should also note I can still hear the drives clicking away, as they did during the pre-clear I'm concerned that I'm 60% the way through a very long pre-clear and fear any damage that may be done to my drives + the need to potentially start again! Can anyone explain the message on the screen or advise how I can trouble shoot and get the web interface to work? Thanks
January 20, 201610 yr Author can you telnet in ? Yes, just logged in... although I know next to nothing about telnet! Following the wiki I got the syslog to come up, attached (had to zip, txt file is too big) Looks like the same pattern of events (not sure if its suppose to do that) until 20:42 today (20/01/2016) when it shows a series of timeout/kill lines ultron-syslog.zip
January 21, 201610 yr Your flashdrive is showing corruption (reading super.dat). The super.dat is an important file (see: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3038.msg25085#msg25085 ). In your case the array has never really started so its no real problem.. Take your flashdrive out of your system, run a chkdsk on it from windows.. Then put it back into your unraid system.. I think your system has allready crashed, in that case a reboot would be necessary.. You can check if your preclear is stil running.. Telnet in and check the folder /tmp, this is where preclear is storing its log files of its running process. Check what the latest file is and see if it changes, if it does, then preclear is still running. 1) telnet in 2) cd /tmp 3) ls -alg Find the latest file Wait a minute 4) ls -alg Check if the latest file has changed Yes? Preclear probably still functioning fine No ? Cry and start over
January 21, 201610 yr Author Ok thanks, I'll try that tonight. Any thoughts on how this could have happened? Is it a hardware fault with the USB Flash drive? I'm using a Sandisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 16Gb drive, purchased and used only for unRAID.
January 21, 201610 yr Community Expert If you haven't assigned any disks yet super.dat hasn't been created yet. How much memory do you have? Have you done memtest (on boot menu)?

To clarify assigning drives - when trying to get the pre-clear process running, I had originally assigned both the drives but have never started the array. I un-assigned the drives and started the pre-clear.

January 21, 201610 yr Author So I can't explain this... but when I got home this evening to try sorting this mess out via Telnet I noticed the GUI was now accessible! I got in and went to the preclear plugin - its still running: ================================================================== 1.15b = unRAID server Pre-Clear disk /dev/sdc = cycle 3 of 3, partition start on sector 1 = = Step 1 of 10 - Copying zeros to first 2048k bytes DONE = Step 2 of 10 - Copying zeros to remainder of disk to clear it = **** This will take a while... you can follow progress below: = = Disk Temperature: 34C, Elapsed Time: 100:23:12 289978+5 records in 289978+5 records out 608133033984 bytes (608 GB) copied, 3503.99 s, 174 MB/s Wrote 608,133,033,984 bytes out of 8,001,563,222,016 bytes (7% Done) So its into its third cycle. I'll leave it running for now then once its done I'll power down and put the USB flash drive into another machine and run chkdsk. If it is corrupted I'll return it for a replacement.

If it is corrupted I'll return it for a replacement. unRAID not being able to read super.dat is normal in your situation since it hasn't been created yet. Even if the flash were corrupt that usually doesn't mean the device is bad. Corrupt just means the filesystem is inconsistent in some way. This usually happens when a write isn't completed for some reason.
