January 22, 201610 yr Finally got my server built! Thank you guys for all the previous assistance. I've ran into a little problem connection to the server, as the title says. I am running the latest stable release unRAIDServer-6.1.7-x86_64.zip Here is the issue. When attempting to connect to http://tower , afte being redirected to tower/ i receive an "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED" blank page. I have the server running with a monitor and I can see it giving me a 192.168.1.236/24 address. I can ping this address. Also, I have verified by using the server root and ifconfig that this is indeed the servers address. I've also tried from a second comptuer, a macbook with tower.local in safari as well as using just the ipaddress, same result. On my network, I do not have any IPS IDS or internal firewalls running, systems setup, and verified by a second machine that it isn't just windows firewall being all funny. I have also test, besides chrome, with Edge and Firefox, same result. Is there a Port that I am missing? Should it be tower:8xxx or something along those lines. I've done a quick search of the forums and cannot find anything related to "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED". If you can find that for me, link me and I will be grateful. This system only has 1 NIC installed. The initial video says if you're having trouble connection, move the ethernet cable over to the other network interface and try again. Sadly, only one NIC to try. Thank you so much in advanced!
January 22, 201610 yr Loggin into the server itself, can your server ping other devices on your network?
January 22, 201610 yr Community Expert Try using 192.168.1.236 for the address in your browser. In fact, I have always used the IP address and that should always work. (What should be happening is that http://tower is ALWAYS converted to 192.168.1.236 IP address by your router.) As another example the IP address of the google search engine is 74.125.127.147 and if you want to test it out, copy-and-paste it into the address bar of your browser and see what you get.

Thanks for the response. I belive I mentioned that I tried the Ip address as well, on both the macbook and my desktop, same result. I'm not having any local network issues, everything is connected hardwire, and I can ping the unraid servers Ip address from all devices on my Lan.
January 22, 201610 yr Author Loggin into the server itself, can your server ping other devices on your network? Yes, that is something I tried after posting this. From the server I can reach other devices via the ping command. No packets lost during any attempts either direction.

January 22, 201610 yr Author UPDATE: Still cannot connect to the server. I even attempted to re-install the OS again to see if something glitched out on it. I'm completely open to suggestions and recommendations. I'm thinking about going the route of paying for their support, if it will fix the issue. As an update. I can ping both directions [from the server to my desktop and from the desktop to the server]. I get the same error when accessing it from a different computer (different which is also a different OS) I also get the same error when I try just the IP Address, on either system. All devices connect to the same network switch. My PC is hardwired into the same network switch (Unmanaged) as the server. The macbook is of course wireless to a WAP on that switch. I am not doing anything super secretive about the network, or VLANing. It is a basic Class C network. 192.168.1.x /24. I have scanned my entire network, there are no conflicting IP address. I have also replaced cables between the machine, just in case.

How about this, if you open file explorer or Finder in Mac, can you open an SMB connection to the server ok? \\tower or \\[ipaddress] from file explorer would be the way.
January 22, 201610 yr Can you telnet or ssh to the box using the name or IP address of the Unraid system and login as root? (no password on the root user until you set one via the web ui).
January 22, 201610 yr Author Telnet works: I am able to connect via Putty. SSH works: Via putty Using windows I am able to \\tower in my file explore File Explorer to connect. No folders there (of course). Browser is still a no go on any machine. I even tried my Linux Mint Desktop with firefox, same result. Sadly I can't set anything up until I can connect, can I? (Thanks for the assistance guys, the help is much appreciated.)
January 22, 201610 yr If you log in locally or connect using Telnet or SSH and execute the following command, what do you get? Lots of files or just a ssh/ folder? ls -l /boot/config/
January 22, 201610 yr I would suggest that you login via telnet and run the command 'diagnotics'. This should generate a zip file which you can post here and someone experienced in examining them can have a look to see if there is anything obvious showing up in the log files.
January 22, 201610 yr Community Expert If you log in locally or connect using Telnet or SSH and execute the following command, what do you get? Lots of files or just a ssh/ folder? ls -l /boot/config/ Try this one first. If this is wrong you may not be able to get diagnostics.

As an FYI, if you type \\tower and see no shares, that's wrong. The default behavior (even with no disks assigned/array mounted) is to share the USB flash device as a share over SMB called "flash". If you're not seeing that, something else is wrong.
January 23, 201610 yr Author Again, thank you for assisting me. I have no clue why this isn't coming up. Still staying positive about my investment into UNRAID. In regards to the correct naming of the USB Flash Drive. Here is a picture of the USB Flash Device (thumbdrive) to show proper naming of "UNRAID" in all caps - http://i.imgur.com/OdsayZk.jpg Here is a picture of the shared folder within windows that JonP asked : http://i.imgur.com/LmuaKOq.jpg Empty. I have changed the IP Address of the machine now from 2xx to 100. I was thinking that maybe there was something funkey going on that was stopping certain traffic. However, I have verfied there is nothing internally (Or externally) that should be interfering. My new setup is an isolated network, Asus Router with DCHP, my computer & the unraid server on it, all connected wired, no gateway out of the network. TRURL : here is a picture of the result of the command you asked "ls -l /boot/config/" : http://i.imgur.com/nUBPE4I.jpg I have rechecked by watching the video, following step by step. - everything seems to be in order.
January 23, 201610 yr Author I'm starting to really believe that I am not smart enough to run this OS. From the beginning, I have followed the steps, but with the other release unRAIDServer-6.1.6-x86_64.zip Same results. I can talk to the server via TELNET, SSH, PING COMMANDS (both directions). Yet, nothing shows up when i connect via //tower in file explorer. I have checked my hardware just now by running mint on it, no issues there. Hardware I am currently using is CPU: AMD 6300 MEMORY: 8GB (single stick) ECC Crucial 1600MHZ MOBO: Gigabyte AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 VIDEO: GTX660
January 23, 201610 yr Start over, and this time make sure you format the USB as fat32. No other file system type will work.
January 23, 201610 yr Author FAT32 - all three times. I wish that was the case though. - http://i.imgur.com/SCP1r4A.jpg I just did the non-quick format options, since I haven't tried that. I also, installed a second NIC in my system, an INTEL based one, because I heard of some issues with Realteck, same result. I am also seeing this AMD-VI EVENT LOGGED I/O Page Fault Waiting for /dev/disk/by-label/UNRAID dev/disk/by-label/UNRAID not found! does this help?
January 23, 201610 yr Community Expert You can forget about the NIC because your flash isn't being seen correctly by unRAID. If you really did follow all the instructions correctly, FAT or FAT32, volume name UNRAID all caps. make bootable, then there must be a problem with either the flash drive or the USB port. Some have reported problems with USB3 so try a USB2 port or USB2 flash drive.
January 23, 201610 yr Author UNRAID 5 WORKS! So for shits and giggles (very sorry if that offended you), I downloaded Unraid5. Same process as I did before. Format FAT32 with UNRAID named in all caps. Placed into my machine, no settings changed between the previous failed bootup of UNRAID6. Turned on machine... everything scrolled by faster than I could read. I was presented with a "welcome to Linux...." screen. Logged in to http://tower and I was quickly prompted with the unraid web interface. Now! What could be different between the two. I am very confident that I am following ALL of the directions correctly. I have tried also with a MAC to create the UNRAID6 boot disc, just in case. It would not work as well. I then try UNRAID5, from the same PC i was using earlier... no issues. Is it my hardware? (Specs available in previous post)
January 23, 201610 yr Are you booting from USB2 or USB3 stick / ports? The error you were getting is seen when during the boot phase the OS can't see a USB stick called UNRAID which is necessary for licensing.
January 23, 201610 yr Author Again, I do want to thank everyone for helping me out. I am going to try to stick this through to get Unraid6 to work. This is a build that I have been saving up to do for a long time! So I know I am frustrated, but I really want to get this guy up and going. I have so many plans! Thanks for sticking in there for me. To answer some of the questions. I tried with a recommended USB 3.0 San Disk Micro USB (one of the small guys that is quite difficult to get out). I have formatted it each time with FAT32, naming it UNRAID in all caps. I have tried both 6.0 releases that are posted on the website. In regards to the ports I was using on the back of my motherboard. At first I was using the 3.0 port, but I switched to the 2.0 port. Both yielded the exact same result. Prior to giving up, I tried for fun Unraid5. This booted up without any issue whatsoever. Same hardware, same settings, same procedure to connecting with unraid, no issues found. Using the same thumb drive, again, I tried 6, no go. Additionally, I found my 32GB USB2.0 thumb drive and tried it with 6, no go. Tried it with 5, all good. I do not understand what the difference could be. I took pictures of the startup process, maybe that will lead to some answers. Here is a link to the album -
January 23, 201610 yr I'm familiar with that boot process, all it's saying is, "I can't see a USB stick called UNRAID so I'll wait for 30 seconds before carrying on" What I can't work out is why it's not seeing yours.... Anything in the BIOS with USB you can change? Only thing we haven't looked at I suppose....
January 23, 201610 yr Author SOLVED! - Thank you all (i'll say it a million times) everyone helped out. This ended up being one of those really odd things that resolved the issue. I re-flashed my MOBO firmware again (same file as I used when I built this system two days ago) and Unraid6 just popped up. I knew something was up, because out of frustration I decided to take this old Linux server of mine and put the USB2.0 drive on it and see if it was just the release, given that Unraid5 worked without any issues ( that I could find). I tried U5 on the Linux server, no issues. I then for fun, tried U6 on the server, something that hasn't worked as you know... and it booted up differently. It was actually reading out files where it previously said "not found!". Using the advice directly above, I said, I'm going to re-flash the MOBO with the same Firmware that I did when i built the machine a few days back. Upon bootup again, everything came up without a hitch. Just as it is in the video. So the resolution was a re-flash of the MOBO.... While I did do a factory default reset on the mobo, many times ( hoping that it was something i screwed up).... the re-flash was the only thing that resolved the issue. Also! I just tried the original USB3.0 Sandisk drive again, with the solved system. It DOES NOT WORK! This might be another cause of the failure. Why it resolved the issue? I have no clue. Again, I'm up and going... all thanks to you guys.
