HDMI output to VGA input

Featured Replies

Hi guys, maybe one of you have the knowledge. It's not really to do with unraid, but I've had this issue for a while now.

My previous PC was built way back in 2008, so when the monitor started switching itself off after a while and going into standby, and the hardware groaning of old age, I figured it was time for an upgrade.

shiny new PC later, I didn't have the cash to upgrade the monitor, which is an LG LCD with only VGA. So I got a HDMI to VGA converter with the same behavior of the monitor just turning off for no good reason (or, not coming out of sleep mode when I turn it on wanting to use the already booted up windows)

the internet says something about sync being lost, and after a good few hours on the unraid setup (and after I thought it was over, since the monitor used to flicker on login of Win 10 and sometimes never coming back on), I thought it was behind me. It's not.

So before I commit some serious BDSM on my credit card and getting a newer monitor, I was wondering if any of you had some insight into this and what I can do (if anything) to solve this issue?

I've come up empty handed thus far.

Thanks!

Let's do a bit of troubleshooting.

First, if the monitor doesn't wake up, what happens if you cycle the monitor power button?  If that works, you might want to live with that 'solution' until you can afford a new monitor.  (I have a LCD monitor connected by VGA on my unRAID server that I turn off with a power strip and the monitor always comes on with a full display of everything that was there when I turned it off.)

Second thing, what happens if set up a custom Power Option plan (Open Control panel to find the Power Options Settings) and set the Display shutoff to 'never'.  You might also have to set the PC to that option also.

Third item, Read your monitor manual and make sure that there is not some setting in the Monitor's Setup Menu that has a sleep feature that can be enabled.  If it does, turn it off.

Fourth thing, you said you suspected a hardware issue before you replaced the old PC with this new one.  Unfortunately, the hardware issue may well be the monitor...

Yea I did all that. Power cycling/unplugging it sometimes helps, but it doesn't really have my patience to sit there for an hour on end doing it until I get something.

I opted to go buy a new monitor instead. Should have probably replaced the VGA cable and see from there (as otherwise the screen was/is fine, no issues), so going to try that anyway later when I have the time fo' dat' :P

Thanks for your input
