It seems that SC846 series cases are not made to be quiet because system admins seem to think this is normal. If it is quieter than a hair dryer going full blast, they deem it to be quiet.

Why would they be quiet?  They are made to go into a data center?  Have you ever walked through a data center?  Quiet is certainly not a word I would use to describe it.

@MetDeath,

I bought a used 4U supermicro case for my build and although it is well-built, the 5 80mm fans inside the case and the 2 40mm fans in each power supply are loud. I have a space under the stairs in the middle of my house where I want to put my server. However, the noise level is so high that if I put it there, I can hear it throughout the house. I am thinking about replacing the two supermicro power supplies with a standard ATX seasonic, and the 5 80mm fans with something quieter.

I ended up picking up a Supermicro 745 case and similarly it has 5 x 80mm fans and two noisy psu fans.

A very heavy steel case, but very well built.

I turned all the fans to their lowest setting (at least the 5 x 80mm case fans) and having he case in a separate room, the sound in the next room is nearly non existent.

i was thinking of making some mods and replacing 3 of the 80mm fans with 3 x 120mm fans which should reduce some of the noise, however this means taking the server offline for a while as the components inside the case (mobo, GPU, other cards) need to be taken out in order to remove and redesign new fan mounting...

I will live with the case as is for now.

Thought I'd share the case I have and will use once I receive the Intel board and all other parts: http://www.nanoxiausa.com/collections/full-tower-case/products/nanoxia-deep-silence-6-nxds6ww-hptx-full-tower-case

Be aware that on the Nanoxia cases, if you want to put cages in the 5.25 drive bays, you'll have to remove the upper door.

I have the Deep Silence 5 and the door completely seals off any airflow to the upper drive bays and the drives get very hot.

The door is easy to remove though.

I have the huge Nanoxia 6, I ended up taking a binder style paper clip to the door to prop the door open slightly.

Crude, but effective I suppose.

I was thinking more along the lines of building a bumper by placing a dab of RTV on the non-hinged side of the panel and letting it cure fully before replacing the door.

Or perhaps those little rubber adhesive backed feet for small electronic items.

Nothing sticks out very far and (hopefully) there will be enough gap to allow airflow to the drives.

Just realized that the Intel S2600CP board has one x16 PCIE slot and two others in Blue that are x8 but with no restriction for a x16 card. Never seen anything like that before. Does that mean it will accept a x16 card and just cap it to x8 performance? Why the lack of the rest of the slot?

I may attempt to sell it on eBay once received and instead opt for purchasing another board unless it won't make a difference. Don't care if it has a Sleep mode as I tend to leave the UnRaid box on indefinitely but I would like to be able to use multiple graphic cards for virtualization.

If anyone has purchased the Intel S2600CP dual processor motherboard (from www.natex.us), and are in the need of a case with power supply, there are the  *new* 4U Intel Server Chassis's (P4000M family which are designed for the S2600CP mobo) avail on ebay for under $200...  For example, I made an offer of $150 +shipping (which they accepted) for Intel P4308XXMHEN Server Chassis 4U Rack, 550W New Bulk Packaging http://www.ebay.com/itm/182026363400 (8x3.5" hotswap drive bays, single 550 watt PS).

The same seller also has other PS configurations, dual 720watt PS's, dual 460watt PS's, redundant 720watt PS config with only a single PS provided, etc.

They also have the ioshields ($4 accepted offer +shipping) http://www.ebay.com/itm/381121191984 and air duct kits ($10 accepted offer +shipping) http://www.ebay.com/itm/381083917540

Heck, they even accepted my $10 offer (+shipping) for the Intel AXXRMM4 Remote Management Module New Bulk Packaging http://www.ebay.com/itm/201465530335

Picked up one from natex. Even got an email asking if it being a dual nic board was OK. Already shipped. Seems legit enough to me.

Got the board today. Well packed. No way it could have been damaged in shipping.

They used two heavy copper heatsinks to protect the sockets so that's something I won't have to buy if they keep the CPU heat in check.

Dual nic board with 6 pcie slots will work great for me since I can merge my two servers into one now. CPUs will be here tomorrow. Can't wait.

Yup, just means it will take the x16 card at half performance. Unless you are using it for a high end gaming VM you won't see much/if any difference.

That's part of why I shelled out the extra for the Supermicro X9 series (three 3.0 x16 and three 3.0 x8 slots) means full performance for EVERYTHING!!! (not that I'm gaming with it... best I think I can squeeze is a NVidia 980ti or a AMD 390X with my current PSU and drive count. Which I'd rather just run my gaming PC as bare metal 'cause SLI/Crossfire

Mine come tomorrow, do you know if the heatsinks are passive or will we need to get fans for them?

Thanks

Yup. Wasn't expecting free heatsinks. Hope they work well with this cpu. I have spare fans I could add to them if I needed to. The board they sent me looks brand new so hopefully it has a lot of life left in it.

You're going to need some serious airflow to keep the temps down, and/or ducting...

With 4U Supermicro SNK-P0050AP4 coolers with about sustained 70% load my CPUs are running 70c and the max temp is 80C.

I may try changing out the thermal paste when I install more RAM.

With my Noctua NH-U9DXi4's Full load prime95 small FFT's testing, I'm getting 71C after 1 hour.  Not the greatest temps but under that kinda torture, I'm pleased.  TJ Max is 100C for these chips so plenty of headroom.

Strange thing is I have one Costa Rica chip out of my 4, and that one sees to like to run hotter..

Thanks. I currently have the Supermicro SNK-P0048AP4 fans, and they keep the temps less than 65C, but they are a little loud.  I was going to replace them with Noctua NH-D9DX i4 3U, but it looks like I shouldnt spend the money to do that.

I figured as much. I'll see how they do, but plan on getting something better.

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO keeps one of these at a solid 50Cº on an open air testbench at full load, that isn't going to fit in a 4U case though.

are you sure this wont fit a 4U rack case?

The 212 is 159mm, as i understand it the max height in a 4U case is about 149mm-ish

4U case is 177MM its tight

I bought 2 of the Noctura's and they are whisper quiet, since this will be in a room that I like to keep as quiet as possible the $55/HSF for the Noctua's were worth every penny.

But, what are your temps like when all the cores are pegged?

Just wondering what most of you are using your UnRaid boxes for? I hardly peg my i5 box right now and don't anticipate making a dent in a dual Xeon set up, so what are you doing on your systems? Other than what I am currently using it for, ie. CouchPotato, Plex, Sonarr, etc. I plan on running a Windows lab environment for testing a few applications so I can gain some additional knowledge around solutions I might consider deploying at work.
