The one I got from Kelley o malley on eBay has 8 x 3.5 hotswap built in. I have been meaning to ask @jwegman about putting another 5 in the spot up top. He will know more.

This p4000 chassis is not designed for ultimate storage density like a Norco 4224 24 bay.  It's more focused on general compute processing.

 

Which heatsinks are you using with that case?

 

If you are using the P4000 chassis with the S2600CP motherboard you should be using

The baby passive heatsinks that come with the board from Natex are designed for 2U systems and not the P4000 chassis

Apparently the 4x35 hotswap cage that would match the ones in the bottom does NOT fit in the top drive cage, whilst the cages are the same width I believe the mounting points don't line up :(

 

There is a specific 8x2 hotswap cage that DOES fit (it has a different part number to the one that goes in the bottom).

 

We *assume* that standard 4in3, 5in3 style cages would fit - but until someone tries it we won't know..

Concerning 3rd party drive cages in the P4000 chassis; I don't have any Icy docks or the like, but I'm very interested to hear how they work out (in the top 3 5.25" bays)!

 

My main concern with third party drive cages like the Icy Docks are the depth; specifically if they have large cooling fans at the rear. The bottom Intel drive cages (either the 8x3.5", 2 8x2.5", or 4x3.5" ) don't require integral cooling fans as they sit directly in front of the midplane fans. Also the Intel 8x.2.5" in (2) 5.25" bays also doesn't have a fan, but it gest a modest amount of airflow sucked through it which is sufficient for SSD's.  ...I don't know if I'd run and spinning drives in it though...

vt-d is disabled by default, so yea.  Look under the Processor Settings page, then look at the Virtualization options (don't remember the specific names)...

 

Thanks I'll check that. I was able to get two Ubuntu VMs working so I assumed vt-d was good. I'm only stuck on Windows VMs not seeing the virtual drive as a harddrive (lots of topics on that so should find an answer hopefully) and the graphics card showing up in PCI devices but not showing up as an option when setting up a VM.

i also bought the 8x3.5 from malley, i plan to also use a iStar 4 drives in the space of the 3 cdroms

Can anyone confirm that this is the socket I'm looking for in terms of motherboard comparability (2011 or 2011R3)? I'm assuming it's 2011 because it's the older board socket type. Any thoughts on the board below?

The earlier ones you linked aren't compatible. They are for the v3 version of the processor. So you need to look for a v1/v2 like the last one you linked to. For supermicro,  that is the x9 series

Never assume, always check. They usually list the part number, which you can search for on Intel ark. That will tell you exactly what it is.

 

I believe there was a version of this chip that lacks vt-d on eBay, I suggest you avoid that one

 

v1 and v2 are compatible in terms of mobo and slot (some boards may require a firmware update to work with v2), although I haven't seen any v2s at this low price range

Something in the bios perhaps with some USB wake up option?

 

I didn't see any usb wake options in the bios, but turns out there is a jumper setting for it. I set it to disabled, but to no avail.

 

With the usb 3 pcie card installed, it always reboots after a shutdown.

 

I tested the ports and the usb works.

 

I also installed it in a different computer and it didn't cause the reboot after shutdown issue. I guess it has a compatibility issue with the Supermicro X9SRL-F.

 

The company hasn't responded to me yet. Maybe I'll leave a negative Amazon feedback to facilitate that process.

I'm not sure I need 64GB. I don't have plans to run too many VMs. This would mainly be a PLEX build. But I guess now that ram can transcode, it wouldn't be too bad?

 

What do you mean RAM can transcode?  You mean have Plex transcode to RAM instead of your disk?  I’m pretty sure that feature was removed a few months back and no longer works.

 

Get the extra RAM anyway.

For as cheap as this RAM is, the more the better no matter what.  But this 32GB might be the sweet spot.

Ordered all of that. Is there any concern with that RAM? Was very cheap. Wondering if I should go 128GB instead? Pretty happy with all of that for under $550 shipped.

 

Then grab a few of the Seagate 4TB drives and I have several 2TB drives currently.
