January 30, 201610 yr I was looking through the each disk via the gui and noticed some files of the same episode were split across 2 disks. Scenario: All user shares are set to 'High-Water', Only split top 2 directory levels and min space 5GB (there is still plenty left on each drive) User share is Media, then Movies & TV Show sub folders, then individual folders inside each type inside. Disk 1 & 2 i can see the 3 folders being split across the disks. But Disk 1 has a TV show with the movie file, while disk 2 has the same TV Show with all the nfo's and jpegs.. I was on the understanding that anything inside the movie or TV Show folders would be kept together... Hope this makes sense - Any ideas? or is just me not understanding the split level correctly? Cheers, Adam
January 30, 201610 yr Community Expert With a split level of 2 then the top two levels can exist on any disk, and the next level of files/folders split across disks. Once a folder is created at the third level then anything it contains is constrained to the disk where that folder was created. Since you did not give any examples of exactly what you are seeing it is difficult to say if it is expected behaviour or not. Note that in the effect of any potential conflict, then split level takes precedence over allocation method.
January 30, 201610 yr Split level of 2 means the "Media" and "TV Shows" can go on every disk but any directory under "TV Shows" should remain on a single disk. So, it sounds like you have the split level correct. How are the files getting to the array? You can write directly to the disks and bypass the share settings.
January 31, 201610 yr Author An example of what im seeing: Disk 1- -"media" --"TV Shows" ---"elementary" ----"Season 3" -----"S3E22.mkv -----"S3E23.mkv and so on Disk 2- -"media" --"TV Shows" ---"elementary" ----"Season 3" -----"S3E23.jpg (thumbnail) -----"S3E23.jpg (cover) Im happy for Media and TV Shows to be split across multiple disks, but i though anything below TV Shows (elementary) would stay on a single disk. This appears to be the only 2 files which are on a different disk. All my other shows seem to be split correctly. - Maybe i can just copy the 2 files on disk 2 back to disk 1? I transfer files from my main PC to the mapped share file via windows.
January 31, 201610 yr You probably did something wrong copying one time if that is the only case. Copy the files disk2 to disk1 and then delete the extra directories on disk2.
February 1, 201610 yr Author You probably did something wrong copying one time if that is the only case. Copy the files disk2 to disk1 and then delete the extra directories on disk2. So i found another example. I have attached a screen shot also. For TV Shows, would split level 3 be better? Per the screen shot, inside each season is: Season 5 -S5E01.mkv -S5E01.jpg -S5E01.jpg -S5E02.mkv -S5E02.jpg -S5E01.jpg and so on as you can see, it has split Season 5 across 2 disks - Hence is split 3 better? Cheers
February 1, 201610 yr Community Expert Have you always had those shares set up that way? Any share settings are only applied as the files are written. They don't have any affect on files that are already there.

I haven't changed any share settings since
February 3, 201610 yr Split level 3 would only be better if you want the files for a season to be spread out over multiple drives. I would leave it at 2. There is no explanation for what you found in the info you have provided.
