AMD/Motherboard Combination for ECC support

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I have been looking into building a NAS setup for a while now. I did as much research on my own as I could but I want to double check this build.

AMD FX processors fully support virtualization with AMD-V and AMD-Vi as well as ECC memory support. Unlike Intel's offerings, I don't need a 'server-grade' chip/board to support ECC memory. Yes?

Unfortunately, I can never find clarification if a particular motherboard supports ECC unbuffered/registered.

This is what I'm planning on purchasing:

  • AMD FX-8320E 3.2GHz 8-Core Processor
  • Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard
  • Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) Registered DDR3-1333 Memory x4

Can anyone confirm if this combination will support ECC unbuffered/registered?

Opinions? Suggestions?

Ideally, I would want this server to be running 24/7. While lower power consumption would be better for that, I figured this would be a less expensive investment to toy around with. Additionally, I would like to throw in a video card for some gaming down the road.

So looking for the motherboard information on Newegg I see:

  • Memory StandardDDR3 2133(O.C.)/ 1866/ 1600/ 1333/ 1066 Non-ECC, Un-buffered

But ECC works? I am looking for a microATX board rather than an ATX board. Only other difference is that your board's BIOS is listed as an UEFI BIOS, but that's just the graphical interface?

I can't speak to what newegg says, but when you look at the manufacturer page https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2133(O.C.)/1866*/1600/1333/1066 MHz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
emphasis mine.

Well there is more to UEFI than it being graphical, though for an unraid application that is indeed about all it amounts to.

What I can tell you is that in general all ASUS boards support ECC. You do have to be careful though and do your research as to the boards REAL ability to support iommu. Many claim, some do, many are broken. Sadly there is no way to tell except to buy and try or do a LOT of research on forums. It isn't even just the board that matters but the BIOS version. If you aren't planning GPU pass-through it might not be an issue though.

You still need to make sure it supports iommu and that it is not broken. I find the hard forums are a good place to look. Typically starting with a google search for the motherboard name + iommu is a good place to start.

Again, only if you need gpu pass through.

Quick search resulted in that it does NOT support iommu. I would prefer gpu pass through

That is unfortunate. Also probably why I settled on the board I did  ;D
