February 1, 201610 yr Having a few issues with my #1 Media Server as in the following linked thread. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=46051.0 I'm not sure if it is the PSU or the MB causing the problem but since I want to replace this server with a new one, most likely with a SuperMicro MB and Xeon 1241 or so. I though I would just replace the supply and see what happens. I was looking at the Seasonic 460 supply, linked below, which is fanless and was wonder if fanless is the way to go or not for a server.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151099 Will fanless cause more heat build up in the case than a PSU with a fan?
February 1, 201610 yr I don't have experience with a fanless PSU, but I'd be concerned about the thermal profile - servers don't like undissipated heat. Some modern high efficiency PSUs only run the fan under heavy load, anyway - the Seasonic in my signature does that. And under high load - you probably want the additional cooling.
February 1, 201610 yr The Seasonic X series are excellent units => fanless is fine as long as there's good ventilation in the case. In reviewing your other thread, I think there's a good chance the power supply is in fact the issue ... the CX series Corsair units are their low-end units and I've seen quite a few issues with these (I always recommend using their higher-end units if you're using a Corsair PSU).
February 1, 201610 yr Author Yes, if you noticed my other server has a Seasonic.. The over voltage is small. .01V but is a sign something is wrong. It's been in use since 2009, not that that should be an excuse. The thing is the Seasonics in this class seem to be all fanless, at least from Newegg.. I'll expand my search a bit.. Are there any other companies other than Seasonic that make good PSUs? Im not familiar with PC components as far as what is good and etc., except for what I currently have.
February 2, 201610 yr The Seasonic X series are excellent (including the fanless unit you're looking at); and the Corsair HX and AX units are equally good. For the smaller SFX units the best choices are the Silverstone units. Virtually everything I buy these days is from that list.
February 2, 201610 yr Author What do you think about this PSU? http://www.amazon.com/Seasonic-SSR-450RM-450-Watt-certified-Supply/dp/B00918MQ8G/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454379754&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=SEASONIC+SSR-450RM+450W+R I couldn't find this at Newegge But Amazon has it. It's the same supply I have in my #2 Backup server.
February 2, 201610 yr That's the G-Series. I'm using the 550w successfully in my server. Oddly, the 550w costs less than the 450w on Amazon...

Must be from different supplier. I ordered the 550 since I have the 450 I can interchange them in a pinch without pulling all the cables, just 2.

The cables don't always interchange electrically. In this case, they probably will, but it's not a certainty. I've seen more than one situation where the cables physically matched, but the connections weren't pinned the same.
February 2, 201610 yr Author I would think same manufacture an same PSU series they would but noted. BTW I just pulled my 450 w from my backup server and put it in my media server and the bad news is when it booted first time It went right to "Hardware Monitor", same issue as before but on shut down and reboot it worked normally. So it's not be the PSU and could be the CPU or MB. I Believe the CPU regulates the lower voltages for ram.. Well I was planning a whole new build anyway but wanted to take my time... So far I have a new PSU coming in and bought 16g ecc ram on sale last month so I need to decided which MB and CPU. I was leaning to a SuperMicro (I already have one and love the IPMI).. Maybe a X10xxxx, not sure which one. And maybe a Xeon e3-1241.. A Case.. can't find one I'm really in love with, they stopped making the ones I did.
