I am actually in the process of getting everything for my unraid server, but in the mean time, i need help with the network set up so everything will jive once my server is up and running. and i can then just plug er in and go! ( may not be as simple as that, but want it to be)

 

I have:

 

upstairs:

Airport extreme base station (AEBS) dual band for wireless/gigabit ethernet ports wan(ed) to 327 dsl modem from verizon

mac pro>hard wired

mac mini>not here yet

ps3>wired

 

yellow machine by anthology solutions: (have not set it up yet as i need advice as to how it will work in the scheme of my network)

I want to set up the Yellow machine= huge time machine back up for all mini's/mac pro and hp laptop (macintosh term)

(I will aslo have 1 -2 laptops running wirelessly and an Airport express wireless plugged in downstairs. )

Now here are the questions:

1. do i need any of the two above switches to increase my total speed of transfers and streaming/transcoding of my entertainment stuff? (in my description below, possibly)

 

2. where and how would i hook up the items to include the yellow machine, (as i want to use the YM as a huge back up for all  computers in the house) (possible set up below)

 

3. do i need to run each machine to the yellow machine in order to make backups to it? (YM does NOT have GIGABIT ethernet capable ports, )

or

can i hook the YM to one of the switches ports or aebs, and have all computers still see it and make backups to it everynight/week/day?

 

4.Do i need to run ps3 media server, or can i just point everything  such as my ps3's and minis to my unraid and play everything that way?

 

I am thinking of doing this:

 

327verizon>WAN to AIrport extreme base station> Yellow machine hooked up hard wired> then hard wire in both switches from AEBS routed to downstair and upstairs ( if i need both?) as i

want to hard wire all components (2 mini's, 2 ps3's, 1 mac pro UNRAID SERVER,printer,yellow machine) w/cat6 cable for quicker speeds

 

I will be running wireless as well, from the aebs,

 

from there set up my airport express wireless card downstairs so i can hook up itunes to outdoor speakers.

 

 

I know it is long, and confusing, but i need help and

PLEASE HELP THIS NOT TO TECHY, TECHY SET THIS ALL UP!

 

(BTW) the YM can serve so many functions: firewall/backups/router/8 port switch just not gigabit, and many more!

yeah the tm is pretty dated by todays standards but it is capable of doing so much that it is kind of cool, plus what i will be using it for will not really stress anything at all:

 

total computer back up like the tmie machine from mac!

Are you using the Yellow machine as a proxy server or frewall? How are you hooked up to the iinternet?

people are using the server to do just this, and they are using them as headless units to do so....

Your ABIT AB9 Pro will not run headless. Just get an older PCI video card.

As far as PS3 Server, you can run it. It involves downloading a few files and installing them via the go script. (like an autoexec.bat file).

A gigabit switch will not make the backups faster. They will all eventually be competing on the 10/100 YM connection.

However, this would allow you to access the unRAID server (and other machines) on your network faster.

 

You could accept the speed limit, use the YM machine as the network switch(hub).

The only issue with that is if a hard drive fails and you have to change it out, turning off the YM shuts down your whole network.

 

best to get a switch and separate it.

plex is like front row,(mac programs) theater program that runs all of your videos/music/movies and many other items such as channels downloaded and netflix and it is pretty awesome!

ok cool, the printer is wireless/ethernet, so i am setting it up both, one for the wired network and one for my wireless network,

 

aebs is the gigabit one with 3 ports left after i wan it to dsl modem,

then with switch connected i will have 2 left open,

 

so everything to the 16 port switch, any advice on a good 16 port?

I have a v. basic 16 port Gb tp-link. It is noisy (fan needs swap). However still working great. At the time it was much cheaper than a well known brand, came as rack mount, metal case.

 

Now big boys aren't much dearer, offer jumbo frames. So called smart switches look to be good.

all right, i got my 2 mac minis and hooked them up just to test them tonight, they are nice, for being older versions!

 

they will work for the HT, plus i got screen sharing, and can hook up to each from one another, which is cool,

 

i am still looking for the sat to ide adapters, i have the power cables to go from ide to sata, but still need the adapters,

 

i've enclosed a pic of the inside of the YM, any thoughs about the adapter i should go with? i need to extend the adapter down the side a bit perhaps, or just lay them ontop of each drive's cabling?

 

also got my hp procurve switch, i should have gotten 1 12-16 port, but may just get 2 of these total!

 

awaiting a few cords and cables to attach my mini to the tv's.

 

 

and still need to figure out what type of case i want for the unraid system?
