November 3, 200916 yr I am actually in the process of getting everything for my unraid server, but in the mean time, i need help with the network set up so everything will jive once my server is up and running. and i can then just plug er in and go! ( may not be as simple as that, but want it to be) I have: upstairs: Airport extreme base station (AEBS) dual band for wireless/gigabit ethernet ports wan(ed) to 327 dsl modem from verizon mac pro>hard wired mac mini>not here yet ps3>wired yellow machine by anthology solutions: (have not set it up yet as i need advice as to how it will work in the scheme of my network) http://www.geek.com/articles/xyzcomputing/anthology-solutions-yellow-machine-terabyte-storage-appliance-20050930/ or... http://www.tomsguide.com/us/review-p400t,review-593.html I want to set up the Yellow machine= huge time machine back up for all mini's/mac pro and hp laptop (macintosh term) downstairs: mac mini>not here yet ps3>wireless Wii>wireless (I will aslo have 1 -2 laptops running wirelessly and an Airport express wireless plugged in downstairs. ) I am looking to add (if needed for speed???) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833316076 and possibly: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082 Now here are the questions: 1. do i need any of the two above switches to increase my total speed of transfers and streaming/transcoding of my entertainment stuff? (in my description below, possibly) 2. where and how would i hook up the items to include the yellow machine, (as i want to use the YM as a huge back up for all computers in the house) (possible set up below) 3. do i need to run each machine to the yellow machine in order to make backups to it? (YM does NOT have GIGABIT ethernet capable ports, ) or can i hook the YM to one of the switches ports or aebs, and have all computers still see it and make backups to it everynight/week/day? 4.Do i need to run ps3 media server, or can i just point everything such as my ps3's and minis to my unraid and play everything that way? I am thinking of doing this: 327verizon>WAN to AIrport extreme base station> Yellow machine hooked up hard wired> then hard wire in both switches from AEBS routed to downstair and upstairs ( if i need both?) as i want to hard wire all components (2 mini's, 2 ps3's, 1 mac pro UNRAID SERVER,printer, yellow machine) w/cat6 cable for quicker speeds I will be running wireless as well, from the aebs, from there set up my airport express wireless card downstairs so i can hook up itunes to outdoor speakers. I know it is long, and confusing, but i need help and I WILL EXCEPT ANY ADVICE GIVEN, PLEASE HELP THIS NOT TO TECHY, TECHY SET THIS ALL UP! (BTW) the YM can serve so many functions: firewall/backups/router/8 port switch just not gigabit, and many more! thank you for all and any help!!
November 3, 200916 yr unraid doesn't do transcoding or upnp out of the box so I don't know whether you will be able to play media from it on your ps3. Your mac's will be able to map a drive using smb and play media from there. Not sure I can offer any info on any of the other questions.
November 3, 200916 yr Just curious, did somebody give you that yellow machine for free? It's pretty nifty eh? dated by today's standards, still nifty.

November 3, 200916 yr Author yeah the tm is pretty dated by todays standards but it is capable of doing so much that it is kind of cool, plus what i will be using it for will not really stress anything at all: total computer back up like the tmie machine from mac! should work out fine!!
November 3, 200916 yr Author Just wondering if anyone can assist me in the whole set up or give me any advice as to how it should be set up? i just need to know (from more knowledgable people) if my purposed system set up will work and all of the computers will see the yellow machine to make a complete computer(s) back up. thanks any suggestions if i need the two switches? thanks again!

Your ABIT AB9 Pro will not run headless. Just get an older PCI video card. As far as PS3 Server, you can run it. It involves downloading a few files and installing them via the go script. (like an autoexec.bat file). Anthology Solutions Yellow Machine TeraByte Storage Appliance Summary RAID 5 NAS with built-in 8 port 10/100 switch and mediocre router / web proxy server The YM has a 10/100 port, It can serve as the hub in your network if speed is not an issue. I;E. If you are serving HD matereial, then you will probably need a gigabit switch. The YM can probably hang off the new Gigabit switch as long as one of the two does does the cross over functionality. Modern switches usually handle this automatically. This would let you backup to the YM from any machine on the switch. switch: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166014 I've used two of these for years. They are now idle in my closet, but worked well for a long time.

I was offered the suggestion to use it as the firewall router because it has 8 ports, but it may be too slow, and not have much expansion capabilities, so i was going to get a switch as you suggested! -I will have to get an old pci card for my mb, as you stated it cannot be ran headless! (thank you!) -I may want to run ps3mediaserver, if I am using plex for almost everything else with my mini, (i may not need to run the ps3media server correct?) will probably need a gigabit switch for HD 1080i and 1080p, plus i want to back everything up to the ym as quickly as possible.switch may make it faster? the yellow machine will be used to store back ups only, not really interested in the firewall aspect as i am pretty dumb when it come to stuff like that. it can do a lot but i was told it may be too slow due to not having any gigabit ethernet ports? and i dont know how to set it all up. what do you believe? switch may be better? I just want it to be as simple as possible and if adding a switch makes it simple, then i am all for that! (how would i hook up each device: ym, aebs, modem, switch and items all plug into which sorce? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING TO MY STUFF! Your are really helping this total un techy techy...
November 3, 200916 yr >> I may want to run ps3mediaserver, if I am using plex for almost everything else with my mini, (i may not need to run the ps3media server correct?) I do not know the answer to this one. What is plex? >> will probably need a gigabit switch for HD 1080i and 1080p, >> plus i want to back everything up to the ym as quickly as possible.switch may make it faster? A gigabit switch will not make the backups faster. They will all eventually be competing on the 10/100 YM connection. However, this would allow you to access the unRAID server (and other machines) on your network faster. You could accept the speed limit, use the YM machine as the network switch(hub). The only issue with that is if a hard drive fails and you have to change it out, turning off the YM shuts down your whole network. best to get a switch and separate it.

YES! if the ym looses a drive the whole network will have to go down, so a switch it is!! so some of my final questions: (how would i hook up each device: ym, aebs, modem, switch(s), unraid server and all items all plug into which source? so i may need 2 switches then to make all the connections then. what about these switches, any different from the one you posted?: besides price:) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833316076 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082 thanks again!!

You can hook up some of the slower devices to the AEBS if there are switch ports. Or the switch ports on the YM For example. the printer could be on either. The wii probably will not require that much bandwidth and can also be on either.

November 3, 200916 yr Most of your clients will be 10/100 or w/less. Your aebs if newish will have 3 gigabit ports. Is the printer usb or ethernet?, if usb will have to attach to aebs or be shared from a mini mac, having a usb printer and buying 8 port switch leaves a couple of free ports. Personally I'd hook dsl into aebs, 16 port switch into a gb port on aebs. Same setup if aebs is 100Mb model. Wire everything to the switch. As mentioned before, if ym is shut down, it will shut down the built in hub. Not ideal. The aebs will have enough work routing internet and handling w/less, try to keep it's switch ports free.

November 4, 200916 yr I would suggest looking on smallnetbuilder. I have a v. basic 16 port Gb tp-link. It is noisy (fan needs swap). However still working great. At the time it was much cheaper than a well known brand, came as rack mount, metal case. Now big boys aren't much dearer, offer jumbo frames. So called smart switches look to be good.
November 4, 200916 yr I think it is overkill, but I bought a used DELL 2715 from eBay. You could probably wait on the 16 port switch by leveraging the less used components on the other ports. AEBS & YM. Yess if the YM is down, your Wii or printer may not work. LOL. In any case if you are going to spend for an 8 port switch, then shop around for the 16 port and decide. I'm happy with my used Dell

I will have to sticky this thread so i can follow it, once i get my sata to ide adapters for the ym!! cant wait to see if it will work! ANY SAT TO IDE ADAPTER RECOMMENDATIONS?? I have a tight fit in the ym and need something that would have a cable on it almost so the items can lie flat under the caseing. thanks
November 4, 200916 yr You can get a fanless 8 port gig switch, that might suit better as anything with a fan in it will eventually become noisy.
November 4, 200916 yr Author You can get a fanless 8 port gig switch, that might suit better as anything with a fan in it will eventually become noisy. weebo tech showed me a couple to look at, wheras i am looking at the hp procurve from new egg, probably going to get that one, ordered the hp pro curve today from new egg!! Thanks
November 8, 200916 yr Author all right, i got my 2 mac minis and hooked them up just to test them tonight, they are nice, for being older versions! they will work for the HT, plus i got screen sharing, and can hook up to each from one another, which is cool, i am still looking for the sat to ide adapters, i have the power cables to go from ide to sata, but still need the adapters, i've enclosed a pic of the inside of the YM, any thoughs about the adapter i should go with? i need to extend the adapter down the side a bit perhaps, or just lay them ontop of each drive's cabling? also got my hp procurve switch, i should have gotten 1 12-16 port, but may just get 2 of these total! awaiting a few cords and cables to attach my mini to the tv's. and still need to figure out what type of case i want for the unraid system? any sugg's to my q's? thanks guys!
