[SOLVED] Help me out with a few issues with v6 upgrade (please)...

Featured Replies

I am a long-time unRAID user, but of limited technical ability.  I only use unRAID for Plex and backups/archiving (lots of photo/video that I shoot for my son's soccer club).  I recently bought a couple of new drives, and decided I might as well upgrade to v6 before I put them into service, so they could be formatted XFS.  I downloaded unRAID 6.1.7, and followed the steps in this thread:

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Upgrading_to_UnRAID_v6

I copied over my old config and config/shares files as indicated.  I muddled through some things, and got Plex working, and have access to my original shares from my PC.  But...

1) In the GUI, when I click on the Shares tab, nothing shows up.  I created a new one, and it didn't show up there, but it does show up in the "Shares List" of the Dashboard tab, along with all my old shares.  I assume that these should show up in the Shares tab so that they can be managed?

2) I was a little (lot) confused about the folder setup for Docker, but, based on ideas from these two threads:

https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=37732.0

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=40937.0

I decided to set up a folder called "appdata" where I was going to put the Docker file and subsequent applications (like Plex).  I was able to create the folder--that was the one I created above, but I can't edit it to be "cache only," so it is a user share, which I understand from those threads will not work.  Seems like my choices are to fix the folder properties, or move my Docker file to the root of the drive?

3)  There also appeared an "Apps" and an "apps" folder in my directory.  I am not sure where these came from, and the "Apps" folder has some Plex stuff in it.  Should I have skipped the "appdata" folder above because there is a default "Apps," folder that is created?  Confused about the origin of those.

4) Do I need to just start over?  I assume that since I haven't added or changed any files, I can start over with v6, or just write my old v5 files back onto my USB, and pick up where I left off?

Thanks!

Sounds like you are really close. I think the only issue you are having is due to an adblocker or something interfering with your browser. Lots of reports about this on the forum, most often the symptom reported is the User Shares page not working. I think if you get past this you will be on your way.

Fixed that for you, British guy checking in here....

A share can still be a user share and set to cache only...

You might run into trouble with an Apps and an apps folder (are these showing up as shares?)  if so, they were created by your volume mappings on the various applications (post a picture of the mappings (or of the app list on the docker tab)

You may run into trouble because linux is case sensitive on folder names whereas windows is not.  If you wind up ever manipulating files within these folders via a windows box, some strange things could happen

Oh, LOL, you got it straight off...  I actually searched for this problem, and came up with nothing about adblocker... I disabled it for unraid, and sure enough, my shares showed up.... Thanks!

Dare I say that my son is a Manchester United fan?  How about Leicester City... I think Vardy must have sold some part of his anatomy to the Devil in the off-season--crazy stuff.

After I was able to see the shares, I did not see any option to set the "appdata" share as cache, maybe because you can only set a share as cache if you actually have a cache drive?  My solution was to move the docker file to the root of one of my drives, and completely delete the "appdata" folder, since Plex seemed to want to go into "apps."  There was nothing in the "Apps" folder, which appeared to be a hold-over from my v5 setup, so I deleted it.  I also cleared "apps"--which was a real pain because I couldn't get it cleared with Windows, so had to search how to do it, and came up with the Putty/MC solution, which worked quickly.

Thanks for the comment... see above... I ended up dumping "Apps, and starting over with "apps."  There are still "Plex," and "plexmediaserver" subfolders, but I guess I don't care, as long as it works... it is still rebuilding, but I expect it will be fine.

Yeah, you need a cache drive to set it to cache only.

Thanks for confirming.  I went ahead and set the docker file on the root of one of my data drives, and it seems fine.  Plex rebuilt itself, and seems extremely fast compared to the old setup, so I'm pleased with that.

Unfortunately, one of my two new disks tossed some errors in the preclear, so I tried to preclear it again, and couldn't get the script to run on the console.  But, I found this thread:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=39985.0

loaded the plug-in script, and it seems to be working.  One of the disks was clean, so I swapped the parity drive, and it is rebuilding while the other disk is being precleared again.

One thing I noticed is that I don't see "Disk 1,"Disk 2," "Disk 3" in my Windows Explorer anymore--am I remembering wrong, or did those used to show up, and now don't?  I had a few folders I was going to pull off one disk and stick on another before I swap it, and I don't see a way to do that without being able to see the disks themselves (versus just the share folders).  I know I can always use MC, but I find it easier to use File Explorer if it is only a few files.

They are disabled by default in v6 and if you want them they need to be enabled under Settings->Global Share settings.

They are disabled by default to minimise the chances of users potentially losing data by trying to copy from a disk share to a user share or vice versa.  You should only copy disk share to disk share, or user share to user share, and never user share to/from disk share, or you risk data loss.

Funny that you brought this up, because I had noticed the user shares/disk shares under the "Shares" tab, but don't recall seeing or being aware of this in the past.  I had to do some searching to try to understand the difference; it seems most people don't bother with disk shares at all, and I don't know why I would need them for my use of unraid (I have none currently), but I do understand that they should not be mixed.  I will just use MC to move the few folders over to the other drive, which I assume will be safe.

Thanks for everyone for your help... nice to know there are some really smart people out there!  Now, if I could just figure out how to set the time on my VCR...
