(Solved) replacing drive - device is disabled , contents emulated.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

i have recently embarked on building an unraid server - its v6 and the config consists of 6 drives

ssd cache drive

6tb parity drive

2tb storage

2tb storage

6tb storage

6tb storage

into week 3 of the server i got hold of another 6tb drive , so i thought of replacing one of the 2tb ones with the new one.

so i decided to swap the disk on slot3 - the disk had no data.

i shut down the array , powered off the server replaced the drive and powered back on the server. ( i did not empty the slot before powering off the server...)

When the server was powered on , in slot 3 i immediately got to see a red cross with the message device is disabled , contents emulated.

i was able to select the 6tb drive and start the array , with the message to rebuild and expand the raid . however the drive remained disabled.

looking at the log at that time i noticed that the 6tb disk had some read errors. so that one went back to Western Digital.

i attempted to reinsert the original drive , but i got the message that i cannot replace it as the capacity was less than the drive its replacing.

now i got hold of another brand new 6tb drive - with no errors but when i select this one , the array does not even attempt to rebuild or expand.

the slot is constantly disabled.

this is what i see in the syslog :

tjhe drive that i am replacing is the sdc - but somehow the original 2tb drive is still present in the config.

If you sure that the disk was empty, you can make a new config, from settings menu (remember your disk assignment) Then reassign all the disk again... with the new disk, be award of that you get your parity right, otherwise you Will lose data.

Run a parity check when your done.

yes the disk i am replacing was empty.

but by creating a new config will i loose the shares that i made and all the apps and plugins?

Nothing will be lost. You will just have to assign all your drives again and let parity rebuild. Be very sure you don't assign a data drive to the parity slot!

Possibly all the trouble you have had was just due to bad connections but we'll never know. Check all connections before starting again, and if you have any more trouble, go to Tools - Diagnostics and post the complete diagnostics zip so we can have a better chance of telling you what went wrong.

ok thanks all for the info - its doing a parity check and format as we speak - new disk is being recognized in any case.

will update once all operations are done.

Should be doing a parity sync or build. A parity check is what you need to do after the parity sync is completed to check that it was good.
