Well my old MB in my Media server, listed below, had finally stopped booting at all. When it does it works just fine, bios sees the flash but just will not boot from it any more. Near as I can figure it probably an issue with the chip set..

So on to a new server build.

I plan on using my MB, CPU and 450w PSU from my backup server and I have ordered a new case since my old Rosewill is too small and crowed for the MB and drives. New case listed below. It's A bit deep but I'll make it work.

Case: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case.

plus and additional fan, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835352020

4GB of ram will initially be used.

So only the case is new in the media server.

I now need to replace my Backup Server.

The new Sesonic 550w PSU I already have just purchased and is in the Case already, the Zalman MS800.

I now need a new MB and CPU.

Mostly this is for backups of all my computers, systems and multitude of file on them.

Eventually I may run a Linux VM for Home Automation and Security Cams and may need use a Video card. Maybe a very, very lightly used Windows VM.

For a new MB I thought about the X10SL7-F but thought a I only need 10 drive max and though a card such as, 4 Port Controller: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adaptec-1430SA-4-Port-SATA-PCI-E-x4-RAID-0-1-10-JBOD-Controller-Card-/181629244484?hash=item2a49f25444:g:qhEAAOSw7ThUmRwr

Would be more flexible. I already ordered this off E-Bay.

So my board selection is below.

X10SLM-F-O

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182820&cm_re=x10slm-_-13-182-820-_-Product

or

X10SLL-F-O

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G3435283&cm_re=x10sll-_-13-182-819-_-Product

The above MBs with combo deals are $400-425 with a Xeon E3-1231 v3 and $25 more with a E3-1241 v3. There doesn't seem to be much difference between the 1231 and 1241.. Same with the boards except chip set and SATA port speeds.

I also already have 16GB of Crucial DDR3-1600 ECC Ram for the MB, currently in my Backup Server.

Any comments or suggestions on the above appreciated.

After some research here and elsewhere my finger got itchy and clicked the mouse button at Newegg.

I ordered the X10SLM-F and the E3-1241 combo deal...

Well at least at the time it seemed like a good deal for $430, giving my CC a workout this month.

So now my new Backup Server & etc build will be:

Case: Zalman MS800 (from original Backup Server)

PSU: Seasonic | SSR-550RM 550W R (New)

MB: SuperMicro X10SLM-F-O (New)

CPU: Xeon E3-1241 v3 (New)

RAM: 16GB Crucial DDR3 1600 ECC (New)

SATA Controller: Adaptec 1430SA (Used from Ebay)

And my new Media Server Build will be:

Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (New)

PSU: Seasonic | SSR-450RM 450W R (from Backup Server)

MB: SuperMicro X95SCM-F (from Backup Server)

CPU: i3 3240 (from Backup Server) eventually may be replaced with a Xeon, should have gone that way to begin with.

Ram: Kingston ValueRAM 4GB Kit (2x2 GB) 1333MHz DDR3 ECC CL9 DIMM SR  (from Backup Server)

Hopefully I didn't order prematurely but at the moment I have no Backup Server since I pulled all the drives and installed my media drives in it.

looks good two questions ... did you try salvaging that old board that wont boot? Could be issues with cmos, bios battery, bad os, etc.

The other questions, looks like your backup server has a xeon in it you said while your media server has an i3 .... your backups can be run off a raspberry pi lol it just needs data forwarding no computing really and all the computing could be run nightly unless it is a heavy use backup like a legit server. I'm guessing you already had bought that xeon maybe but I would have upgraded the i3.

Yes, the initial problem was it would not boot into UnRaid when turning the server on but would boot if shut down and restarted and the BIOS was messed up in the boot device. I 1st replaced the battery which was just about dead.. That fixed erratic behavior with the boot device in BIOS. I also reset the default BIOS then Cleared CMOS. Then it started getting more difficult to boot taking 3 or more times and finally I couldn't get it to boot at all to UnRaid. It would stop at "Hardware Monitor". I replaced the PSU with a new Seasonic but that was not the issue. Next I pulled every jumper 1 by 1 and reseated them. I also pulled the CMOS chip and reseated that. I even pulled the fans to see if a noisy fan or controller was the issue and pulled and reseated ram and used one RAM card at a time. But no dice.. Tried a new flash drive with a good version of UnRaid. Did I miss something? I did not pull the CPU and reseat that.

I would like to get it going but it may be the chip set and probably not worth fixing..

When it booted to UnRaid it ran fine, Should have left it running. Well it was time for an upgrade any way.

My Backups Server, before I took it apart to use as my Media Server, had the X9CSM-f with the i3.

That will be replaced with the X10SLM-f and the Xeon E3-1241.

My replacement Media Server will (is using) use my X9CSM-f with the i3. If I can find a v2-1230 or something for a decent price I'll replace the i3 eventually. Currently using the X9CSM-f with the i3 for Media and it blows the old AMD/Biostar away even though it's just streaming 1080i video to my MacMini/Plasma TV. Even my wife noticed how much faster the 1300 plus (lot's of his Old House & etc)  TV shows load and it's much faster skipping commercials as well even while recording 4 new 1080i shows.
