November 11, 200916 yr I currently have a Coolermaster Stacker 810 with 14 drives. 12 are in 4-in-3 enclosures, which cool fine. The bottom 2 drives do not have any separate fan cooling, and as a result run hot.. During a parity check they can run over 46 degrees Celsius. To combat this, everytime I check parity I open up case and provide additional cooling with an external fan.... which is a pain. Any way to cool these bottom 2 drives? Also, anyone know how to quiet this thing down? Thanks!

I have drives (a seagate and WD that is pinned between other drives) that hit around 48C when doing a check and run around 38-40 normally.
November 11, 200916 yr I would move the bottom two drives without fans to the top of the case where there are exhaust fans present. I would make sure that the drives are mounted in an chassis that provides airflow through the front of the drive. From what I see of the stacker 810, there are 2 120MM fans at the top back of the case and an 80mm fan at the top of the case. This should be enough to pull the air through the front grlls of fanless mounts. For the 4in3's the air is forced over the drives, but there is little to pull air through the drives at the bottom. Air will flow through the easiest path. If this does not work, then having stronger fans for the back and top may work. Use some form of fan switch to turn them up high during a parity check and turn low at other times. 46C temp is not the worst, but if they go over 50c, I would shut the system down. at 46C I would probably look into re-arranging and/or another 2in3 mount or remove the top power connection and put a 4in3. On my stacker, I have a switch in the back lower quadrant that can be used for reset or power. So I removed my front power Also, I have a 3in2 drive mount bracket (name escapes me) that allows 3 drives to be mounted in 2 spaces but has a fan in front of it. It's sort of like the 4in3's with the fan in front. I just cannot remember the name of it. I'll try and find it later when I am home. it worked really well for my 10,000 rpm scsi drives.
November 11, 200916 yr There have been many threads here discussing drive temps - what's too hot, what's too cool, what is the optimal. Truth is there is not a lot of good data besides anecdotal comments. I try to keep my drives in the upper 20s to mid 30s believing that cooler is better. Generally people here agree that 50+ is too hot. 46 would worry me but others will feel differently. I don't own that case, so can't advise on specifics. You might look at my rig (see link in my sig) for some cooling ideas. Drive cages often use small fans that spin fast and are noisy. I like to use the 120cm fans as they are quieter and move more air.
November 11, 200916 yr Drive cages often use small fans that spin fast and are noisy. I like to use the 120cm fans as they are quieter and move more air. There are 3 in 2 Drive cages that use a single 80MM fan. Something like this will suffice. I use one of these for very hot 10,000RPM SCSI drives which churn 24x7 and it keeps the temps to a safe level. I would stay away from any of the single drive cages that use the 40mm fans.
November 11, 200916 yr I use 3 in 2 cages also, work well. http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf Googles hdd report from 2007. 100k desktop hdds over 6 years. Very interesting reading delivered in a dry and dull manner.
November 21, 200916 yr Someone posted this in another thread and it brought me to thinking of this situation. http://www.quietpc.com/ie-en-eur/products/caseaccessories/kama-bay-black http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4692.0
