hardware question build Skylake and Lian-Li PC-Q25B

Hi Guys,

Is Skylake fully compatible with the latest unraid? looking at a new hardware build using:

1. Lian-Li PC-Q25B

2. AsRock B150M-ITX/D3

question:

1. with the Q25B case apparently they take a full ATX power supply without atx extender? and not only SSF (430w sesonics people use on forum)

2. does anyone know of an equivalent motherboard that has more than 5 sata 3 ports that takes a i3-6100

3. the mb spec says that its compatible with "Supports ECC UDIMM memory modules (operate in non-ECC mode)" / Supports DDR3/DDR3L 1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory. I am currently using KVR1333D3E9SK2/ ECC UDIMs in my n54l microserver, would this ram be okay with the MB?

4. if not to the ecc ram can i get a recommendation on a good affordable brand / model for 16gb?

An SFF power supply is definitely recommended for the PC-Q25b.  Also, 650 watts is overkill for most builds in that case.

Skylake works fine.

 

You CAN use SOME ATX power supplies in the Q25B, but it's far better to either use an SFX unit (best choice) or to add the Lian-Li extender so part of the PSU extends behind the case [ http://www.coolerguys.com/llpe01.html ].    If you use an ATX unit without the extender, not all units will fit ... check the Lian-Li specs for the max length (I don't recall exactly what it is).

 

This server-class motherboard has 8 SATA ports and supports ECC memory, so your ECC modules and ECC-capable i3 will provide the support they're designed for.

Your memory will work fine in the motherboard you listed -- but as I just noted, I'd go with a motherboard with a server class chipset so you actually get the ECC benefits.

 

Your supplier doesn't list the motherboard I suggested ... hopefully they can either get it or you can find another source that has it.

thanks for that, seems i cant get that server based mb other than newegg and Australia doesn't stock it. bummer.

What about the pcie ports and Q25B, i also have a sas 9240-8l that i can use for additional sata. I know the q25b has 2 pci spacers at the back plate, would this card restrict access to a 3.5" drive directly under the Mb?

i wanted to have this configuration potentially with the card inserted, it this possible?

Unfortunate none of your suppliers have that board available -- I suspect they will in time, but no telling how long that might be.

 

The good news is the board you're looking at is only $130 ... and will work fine except for the lack of ECC support and limited SATA ports.    You could just build with it for now, and when you need more ports at some point check to see if the server board is available before adding a SATA card -- and, if so, just upgrade the motherboard and sell the old one instead of buying the additional card.

I assume it would work okay, but don't know for sure.  I can definitely tell you it would be MUCH easier if you use an SFX power supply -- you can see in that picture how crowded the case is with an ATX power supply [Note how it blocks a good bit of the airflow for the top fan].

Are there any mini-ITX Cxxx chipset Socket 1150 boards available through your supplier?  I'm surprised that if a socket 1150 board is considered EOL they don't have any of the new Socket 1151 boards.

The only mini-ITX form factor board in the list at that link is the first one ... and while it's a nice board, it only has 4 SATA ports -- so you'd definitely need to plug in an additional controller.

Silverstone ST45SF-G vs corsair CS450M. A few users use the corsair over the Silverstone ST45SF 450w

also modular vs non modular? apparently non modular have a higher heat rating and thus a better quality components inside?

I have run the Corsair CX430 in my Q25B since I built it a couple years ago.  Works great and super cheap.
