November 11, 200916 yr Hi there, going to build a multimedia server with unRAID and this is what I have come with. Could you guys, please let me know if those components are all supported by unRAID and if there is a better alternative? I want to have a balanced system, i.e. no bottlenecks, etc. The Norco 4220 case is a SFF-8087 backplane case, I can use split cables to 4x SATA cables/controller, however a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 just looks neater - do this card work? Case: Norco RPC-4220 $349.99 (Newegg) PSU: Corsair HX750W (CMPSU-750HXEU) $169.99 (Newegg) Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H $119.99 (Newegg) CPU: AMD 5050e $59.99 (Newegg) RAM: 2 x 2 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 $45.99 (Newegg) SATA controller cards: Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 $111.69 ea (WiredZone.com) Cables: Startec 50 cm MiniSAS sff-8087 to sff-8087 $27.81 ea (Provantage.com) Cable: 3ware CBL-SFF8087OCR-06M SFF-8087 - 4 SATA breakout cable, reverse $12.99 (Newegg)
November 11, 200916 yr SATA controller cards: Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 $111.69 ea (WiredZone.com) This card has not been confirmed as working in unRAID. I would suggest double checking your components against the Wiki's Hardware Compatibility page. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hardware_Compatibility
November 11, 200916 yr Just because it's not there doesn't mean that it doesn't work however. (Lots of negatives in that sentence) If it is supported by linux there's a decent chance that it will work, but you'll be "First Penguin". Make sure that if you buy that you have the ability to return it. If you just want to build something that others have tested, definitely stick to the hardware list. Rob
November 12, 200916 yr Please keep in mind, at the time of this post, the supermicro card on that list has not been confirmed working. It has been tested, but not confirmed to be working. Please search the related threads on this forum first.
November 12, 200916 yr Just because it's not there doesn't mean that it doesn't work however. (Lots of negatives in that sentence) If it is supported by linux there's a decent chance that it will work not really - it just gives you a chance that... you will have a chance that it will be added by Tom in a future release/beta you see unRAID keeps the kernel rather thin, without many (most) of the drivers so the normal procedure is: 1) ask if driver for this is in unRAID 2) hope someone knows (or ask Tom with email -and only with email- to see if he knows/remembers) 3) if yes, great - if not go to #4 4) ask Tom with email -and only with email- to add it ...usually he does add it next beta 5) hope next beta is soon enough (usually not but depends on many things) 6) decide if next beta has all the features you want (for example if you like bubbaraid, you are stuck with latest 4.4 release) and if not, what is more worth it... the new driver or the features you want 7) install the one you decided and be happy
November 12, 200916 yr and #8: Pray that the hardware and driver work in the relatively hard working environment of an unraid server. A fair enough description of the process. Thanks!
