unRAID dedicated GPU not in 1st PCI-E Slot?

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

and thank you for visiting this topic :-) If the question I have is answered somewhere else, I'm terribly sorry, in that case, please DO point me to the right direction and I'll delete this one. I've tried to search through the forum but unfortunately could not find an answer for my question.

I plan on creating an unRAID system with 2 VMs, using 2 GPUs, one for each VM. This would be fine - there are many instructions about this already on the forum (for which I am very thankful to you guys!) but I have a slight issue:

One of my graphics card is an Asus R9 290X Matrix which is unfortunately 3 slot large, the other one is an R9 290X, which is 2 slot large.

I've been looking at a lot of 2011-v3 based motherboards but as I saw, there is absolutely no way for me to fit my 3 slot GPU into them and fit an another 2 slot GPU, except if I use the 1st PCI-E slot for the 280X.

The problem is, AFAIK, the 1st PCI-E slot has to be occupied by the GPU that will be used by unRAID (and that will NOT be passed through to a VM).

So my question is:

Would it be possible for me to fit my 280X into the First PCI-E slot and pass it through to a VM

AND

fit a low-performance, single slot GPU to the last slot and have that for unRAID itself?

Thank you very much in advance for anybody who could help me sort this issue. :-)

All inputs are appreciated!

UnRaid doesn't require a GPU at all, so you shouldn't have an issue.

Since these are AMD cards, you should be able to assign both to separate concurrently running VM's without issue.

You should have no issue "stealing" the GPU from unRaid to the VM you choose to use it with (I do this now).

Hi bungee91 and gridrunner,

thanks a lot for your reply!  :)

I'll try to do this then, fingers crossed.

Have a nice weekend, and thanks again, I really appreciate it!  :)
