New Drives recently added to array and now getting errors.

Featured Replies

I recently added some new drives to my unRAID array running unRAID Pro version 4.4.2 with unMENU and I have now been getting errors in my syslog (see pastebinhttp://pastebin.com/m6ada0548). I tried to search for the errors in the forums and I haven't had much success finding out what is going on so I am hoping you guys can give me some help. I can easily replace the SATA cables but I am getting errors with both the new and old drives (which I never had errors with before) so my first thought is that is not the issue (but I can switch them out if you think that is the problem). Let me know what you think and thanks in advance for your help.

Here is a list of my equipment if it helps.

At "Nov 16 09:08:01", you were hit by a single event, that affected all 7 Seagate 1.5TB drives, and their reaction looks to me equivalent to a very brief disconnect.  The WD 640GB drive was not affected.  All 7 Seagates were affected in the same second, produced the same errors, and were equally recovered, without issue.  The seventh drive produced slightly different errors, but that is only because it was attached to a different disk controller.

To me, it looks like a power spike, definitely not cables or backplanes.  About the only thing you can do is use a good UPS, and make sure there are no loose power cables.

There is a Gigabyte HPA on Disk 1, as evident by the 'HPA 055/168 rule'.  All of the other HPA's reported are spurious HPA's, due to a bug in older kernel versions, fixed in recent releases.

Edit:  As he said, it is not causing you any problems now, but it is good to be aware of it.

RobJ,

Thank you for taking the time to look at my log file. I really appreciate it. I did move into a new place place a few months ago and I have always been a bit wary of the power since I moved in. I am going to get a UPS (should have had one in the first place) and see if it takes care of the issues. Anybody have any advice on a UPS. I am looking at getting this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101006). Again thank you for your help and thank you to everyone for the extra info on the HPA issue.

Sincerely,

Will

That APC UPS looks like it would work just fine.  It has a USB cable to attach to the port on the unRAID server.
